By: Jessica Love
Link to read aloud
Plot description:
This book is about young boy who loves mermaids. He dresses up as a mermaid using things around the house such as towels and leaves. His grandmother gives him some pearls to complete his outfit and then takes him to see the mermaids. The people are dressed as all kinds of beautiful sea creatures. Julián and his grandmother join them in the parade. There were lots of illustrations in this book where we were able to see Julián dress up and play around.
How it is transformative:
This story is transformative because it explores gender identity as well as the LGBTQ community. Although Julián is a boy, his grandmother helped him dress up and takes him to see the mermaids. This story shows how Julián is proud to dress up as a mermaid because his grandmother lets him and supports him. This book explores different groups and even shows a negihborhood that comes together to celebrate things they love.

Introducing Teddy

By: Jessica Walton
Illustrated by: Dougal MacPherson
Link to read aloud
Plot description:
This book is about a friendship between Teddy and Errol. They love to play together everyday. One day Teddy is upset, so Errol asks why. Teddy says that he is scared to lose Errol as a friend, but inside he knows that he is a girl bear and not a boy bear. He tells Errol that he much rather be called Tilly. Errol tells Teddy that he will always be his friend no matter what! Their friend Ava comes to play and gets to meet Tilly for the first time. She is also very supportive of Teddy and even helps him change his tie to a bow. The friendship between Errol, Ava and Tilly doesn't change because they are all best friends and accept who each other are!
How it is transformative:
This story is transformative because it explores the ideas of gender identity. It can be hard for people, especially young children to be honest about how they feel inside. In this story, we are able to see and learn how Teddy was honest with his friends, and they accepted him for who he was. After, Teddy felt much more comfortable being Tilly. This book is also transformative because it touches on the LGBTQ community. It is important for students to see that they should not be afraid of being themselves because they will be accepted and loved just the same by people who love them.

By: Sarah and Ian Hoffman
Illustrated by: Chris Case
Link to read aloud
Plot description:
This story is about a young boy, Jacob, who enjoys wearing dresses. In the story, we first see how his classmates make fun of him for wearing dresses at the dress up station and call him names. At home, at first his parents were not very supportive of Jacob wearing dresses, but after seeing how adamant he was about them and how happy he felt in them, his mom helped him make his very own dress. Boys still made fun of him at school, and people still laughed and made jokes but that did not matter to him. Jacob became proud of his dresses and wore them without caring what anyone thought.

How it is transformative:
This story is transformative because it addresses these ideas of gender identity and LGBTQ communities. We see in the story how Jacob struggles with trying to find out who he is and what he wants to wear, while also dealing with being made fun of at school and questioned at home. This book is a great way to show students how they should be proud of who they are and what they identify as. Although it might take a little for people to understand, you will always be loved unconditionally. This book is transformative and takes the reader into a space where the ideas of gender identity and LGBTQ communities are discussed and present.

Austrian
Illustrated by: Mike Curato
Link to read aloud
Plot description:
This is a cute story about two worms getting ready to get married. The story goes through multiple bug characters that add things like a best man, brides maids, and outfits to their wedding. When it is time to decide who will be the bride and who will be the groom, the worms decide they will both be both! The cricket who is also the one that is getting them married tells them that this is not usually now weddings are, but the worms are not worried. They just tell them to change it, because they love eachother and want to get married and that's all that matters!
How it is transformative:
This book is transformative because it explores the LGBTQ community as well as same sex marriage. Since same sex marriage was a very taboo topic for awhile, this story is a great way to bring these ideas into the classroom. It is transformative because it shows that any two people can get married, no matter how they identify or who they love. It also involved sexual orientation and gender identity because we never really know if the worms or female or males, but it doesn't matter because they love each other and that is always accepted.

His Drag Queen uncle saves the day at a parade and receives an award. It is there that the community of Uncle Leo and the community of Auntie Lotta combine! The narrator loves his Auntie Uncle and thinks it is so cool to have someone who can help count his numbers and sing so well all in one!
How it is transformative:
This story is transformative because it explores the LGBTQ+ community and tells a story from the perspective of a child of what it is like having a family member be a part of that community. This book also focused on being a Drag Queen and what that means as well. It shows how happy the nephew is to have someone in his life that can be both an Aunt and Uncle to him. This book explores the LGBTQ group and also the Drag Queen and how they are able to easily combine with other communities. It creates an environment where everyone is welcomed and loved for who they are.

This gives us insight on life with same sex parents as well as the LGBTQ+ community. I thought that this book did a great job showing that there is no difference between having two fathers, two mothers, or one of each because a parent loves their child the same. This book creates a space and story that involves the LGBTQ community.

It explained how the city welcomes gays and lesbians and was a home for people who "didn't belong". People felt that they were safe in the Stonewall. Everyone gathered here for a place to be themselves. But people judged those who came. Police raided the Stonewall and could not be stopped. People began to stand up for those being arrested or detained by holding an uprising. This uprising is what started the LGBTQ movement which we see now today. That Stonewall in is now a piece of our history.
How it is transformative:
This book is transformative because it tells a history story through simple terms and illustrations about the gay civil rights movement. It explores how these groups were not always welcomed and they had to fight for who they wanted to love and what they believed in. This book explores and address groups including LGBTQ, drag queens, transgender, and more. It confronts our history about what is considered "normal" and tells a story about how and what we see as normal today.

He lived his life as a girl for very long time before he was able to tell his parents he really wanted to be a boy. His parents were very understanding and talked with him so they could make changes to make him more comfortable. Aidans mother became pregnant with a baby. Aiden was excited to be a big brother and help pick out clothes and set up the room for the new baby. But Aiden worried about if these choices are ones the baby would like. He didn't want his new sibling to feel the way he felt as a girl. Aiden knew that things might not be perfect for his new sister or brother, but he did know he would love them no matter what.
How it is transformative:
This story is transformative because it shows the story of a young girl who is transgender and wants to be a boy. This story gives us insight to how Aiden felt when he knew he did not want to be a girl. It gives us a look into the gender identity group and confronts norms we might see when children are born. It was neat to see how Aiden cared so much about making his new sibling comfortable. Aiden taught us in the transformative book how transgender people feel and how they deal with what they go through. This book gives us ideas about gender identity and part of the transgender community.

This book goes through and describes the most common ways that people identify. Some that they named were transgender, boy, girl, neither, and non-binary, but there are many more. It explains how even though someone can be born a girl or a boy, that might not be what they identify as. It is important to know peoples pronouns and what they identify as. The book also explained how it might take time for someone to tell people about their identity, they do this on their own time. In the end, it feels good to be yourself and be open about who you are.
How it is transformative:
This book is obviously transformative because it looks at different gender identities. This idea can be confusing but this story does a nice job of explaining how people don't always identify with the gender they were born. The book lets the readers see into the communities of non-binary, transgender and many more. It tells a transformative story that can be helpful when trying to understand why people identify the way that they do.
