It appeals to those of us who may feel out of place or lost during those difficult years where so much is changing. In that sense, like Donnie, I fear being alone while I try to find my place. It shaped me as a person in the sense that what you, say or do in any circumstance can determine your future but you have opportunity to fix it and change , time is precious and time if only like the film can not go back and I can't try again would make it better.
