In 1991, Japan's economy crashed, and due to this, there were major budget cuts throughout the anime industry. These cuts led to many film and OVA studios losing money and eventually closing. One of the studios was able to stay up, Studio Ghibli. This was because of their latest hit Kiki’s Delivery Service.

Neon Genesis Evangelion came out in 1995 by Gainax studio. It became a very popular and loved show. It fully recreated the Mecha genre. This was because it brought in new complex characters, dark themes, and new complex images. It also brought in two very popular stereotypes to anime. These two stereotypes were called tsundere and moe, shown by two different main characters.

To be specific the first anime that was based off of a video game was Super Mario Brothers: Peach-hime Kyuushutsu Daisakusen which was made in 1986. However that genre only caught traction in the 90’s the super popular ‘Pokemon’ was reformed into anime in 1997. They are still making episodes today.

Although CGI had been around since before 1999. It wasn’t until the late 90’s that it became more popular and widely used. The first fully CGI anime was ALICE, since the technology was still being developed, the style didn't fully resemble anime as it is seen today. However this was the blueprint for future CGI animes.
