This Newbery award winner takes place over a few months the pacing is slowed down in order to follow along with each individual character as they decide if the new family addition is good enough to support the family. A sense of tension is included as the children are unsure if they are good enough for Sarah to stay and marry their father. The theme is accurate with the story line as it follows a widowed family living in the Midwest during the nineteen hundreds.

This book has notable markers of quality through the use of figurative language by using onomatopoeias to build on the sequence of scenes that visualize the plot. Illustrations in the book help build the setting for readers and provides a different point of view from what the main character thinks he’s doing to what he’s actually doing. Visual awareness through illustrations captures the reader's attention and invites the reader to become involved in identifying the what the problem is in the plot and how to possibly find a solution. Schema is built upon by invoking the reader's prior knowledge when assessing the situation in order to find a solution.
