Setting- 1/23

1. Where is the setting or time period (depending if you got an international or historic fiction book)?

The setting of this historical fiction novel actually takes place in the year of June 1453, located in Castle Sant' Angelo, Rome. In this area, Christianity is widely worshiped and those that are believed to have "witch craft" are ultimately executed.

2. What does the setting look like, sound like, feel like, etc... (basically describe the setting).

The setting, since it is known to be in Rome, includes many tall, stone built castles all over valleys that house the king and his children, Princess Isolde and Prince Giorgio. The lands of this wonderful were are ruled peacefully by the King, all the fertile pastures, high mountains, and thick woods that were full of trees. Happiness was everywhere until the well respected man (for he treated his daughter as a equal to a boy) passed away. It was then, although filled with despondency, that his daughter was sent to the abbey with her maid because of the fact that her brother said she was a woman. There, nuns with their heads shaved and covered prayed to their lord, Latin words sprinkling through the air. However, the terrible part of Rome at this time was the fact that there were roads, roads that contained sneaky kidnappers who enjoyed ambushing innocent people. Men usually came running out of the nearby green and mostly-tree-populated woods, hollering and holding sharp daggers that would be used for immediately hurting the equestrians on the dirt path.

What are the similarities and differences to today's time period or America?

To America and to today's time period that we live in, we no longer have kings and queens (just speaking about the United States) or castles that are built to especially serve them. Kidnappers are not found standing in the middle of roads trapping people (it could also be a similarity in a way because we do have dangerous humans living in this area) and we also do not have slaves in our country, although there are around the world. Since this is a democracy, everyone has freedom and are given the equal opportunities, hard work is just required. Additionally, we really don't see "witch craft" as a threat. To further explain, if one person travels to see a magic show or something that involves this activity, they wouldn't have called the police or began panicking. Instead, one would feel amazed and would likely say, how did you do that? If these type of tricks or "illusions" ever even existed in 1453 of Rome, it would likely that everyone would taunt the person performing this, calling it dangerous and allowing the man to be executed. In other words, this would not be taken as a form of entertainment, but sheer danger. In America, to also add on, we have a law that says no one can be tortured with long-lasting or painful suffering until they reach their death. According to the book, during this time period, one woman had committed a terrible crime (she poisoned the other nuns and framed other people), causing these nuns to become extremely, extremely infuriated. Since this emotion over took, the Lady Almoner (the woman that was referred to) was burned and lit on fire, bringing on the most brutal pain there could ever be.
