The organization represents 3,000 members, 33 approved training institutes, and 39 affiliate societies throughout the United States. For over 100 years, the association has issued professional statements on critical social issues.

APsaA Membership Eligibility

Membership in the American Psychoanalytic Association is currently available to psychoanalytic candidates and psychoanalytic graduates of APsaA approved training institutes, new training facilities, members of the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA), or graduates of an institute of an IPA component society. APsaA does have a pathway to membership for individual psychoanalysts who have fully trained outside of APsaA/IPA approved Institutes.

If a background does not match APsaA's membership criteria, Associate Programs offer plenty of opportunities for those interested in psychoanalysis to become involved in the Association.

This treatment method is based on the theory and technique of psychoanalysis. The primary difference is that the patient and analyst meet less frequently, usually once a week. As with psychoanalysis, the frequency of sessions can be customized to the needs of the patient. Another difference is that the patient usually sits upright and opposite the therapist instead of reclining on a couch with the therapist out of view.

Besides these differences, psychoanalytic psychotherapy makes use of free association, the emphasis placed on the unconscious, and the centrality of the patient-therapist relationship.
