Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451 brings attention to how much violence is in the world, not only with the racial movement that was about to happen in 60’s when the novel was published, but with the mass school shootings that began to happen some 40 years later. He begins to show, as evident today, how people will follow whatever they are told without asking questions, and will copy what they see when they are young, and what they see on their T.V’s and radios, and act without thinking twice about it.

Fahrenheit 451 has many examples of how the excessive violence in their society is slowly becoming our reality. Many violent events that happen in their society are normal occurrences and nobody questions why these things are happening, as a result, people are becoming violent with the way they treat and talk to other people. The way Montag handled his anger or frustration was by yelling and being forceful towards the people who oppose him, which seems to be a common way that everyone handles their anger. “Go home, go home!” he yelled. “Before I knock you down and kick you out the door!”(Bradbury 98). During this part of the book, Montag is getting mad with all the woman in his house asking questions his mood starts out seemingly happy, but not really wanting to talk to the woman in his house and then changes to getting aggravated with all the questions he is getting asked, and how robotic they sound. His anger could be a symbol for Montag having a drive where he wants to have meaningful conversations and talk about things that matter and talk with people who think the same way he does. Since nobody else thinks the same way as him, and nobody wants to talk to him about these things since how they were raised was not to talk about things. That makes him frustrated and the way he takes it out is the only way he knows how to, by yelling and getting mad. Montag at the beginning of the book starts off with him sounding just like everyone else in their society, but where he really started to change into someone who is thinking for himself is when he is trying to get the lady out of her house as it's burning down. Everyone around him was screaming and being forceful but Montag was trying to get her out without being as rude as everyone was being, and for the first time, it sounds as if he is becoming his own person, and is seeing that other people are thinking that these books are worth dying for. “Montag placed his hand on the woman’s elbow “ You can come with me.” “No,” she said. “Thank you anyways.” “Please.” said Montag. “Go on,” said the woman.”(Bradbury 36). The tone in which this part of the book could be interpreted as the woman having pride for changing the way society thought, and her not wanting to look weak in front of Montag and anyone who sees her. If you think about it the way she was willing to die just for some books means she's willing to die for the cost of changing the world. She knew that if she got caught with the books just like all the other people knew they would be punished for having them and their houses will burn, but they are willing to die and face punishment if they could at least try and change something. The way Montag was during this part was sounding scared and his voice is breaking as he’s is trying to get her out of the house. Montag is the only one in this situation who was trying to get her out and is trying to do it remotely nicely, unlike Beatty who yelled at Montag to just grab her and be forceful.

Avoidance with violence

People in this society have been avoiding talking about things for a long time, with Montag, he doesn’t talk about things because that's the way he grew up, and where he lived. Towards the middle of the book, we see that Montag is really starting to open up and trying to have actual conversations with Mildred, Beatty, and Faber. Clarisse was introduced very early in Fahrenheit 451 it was clear that she thought differently than everyone else and even Montag she was this free willed girl and the society was uptight and “orderly”. She was made to be a light that would help Montag change from being like the rest of society to having his own ideas and opinions. She was the person who opened his mind up and got him thinking that there’s more to the world than what Montag is seeing and experiencing.”The same girl.McClellan. McClellan. Run over by a car four days ago. I’m not sure. But I think she’s dead. The family moved out anyway. I don’t know. But I think she’s dead” (Bradbury 44). We don’t know the real reason why Mildred didn’t tell Montag about her death all we know is that she “forgot”, whether or not that's true we don’t really know she could have not told him because she knew it could really upset him and she thought she was protecting him in a way. Montag went to Faber’s house to try and get some answers Faber was very hesitant to open the door at first since Montag had called earlier asking about books which scared Faber thinking he was trying to trick him into giving something away. But once he did and they started talking Montag tells Faber why he is trying to change the way people are in this society. “You’re brave.” “No,” said Montag. “My wife’s dying. A friend of mine is already dead. Someone who may have been a friend was burnt less than twenty-four hours ago”(Bradbury 77). This is the first and really only time Montag explains why he is doing what he’s doing. It took the death of a friend and an innocent woman for him to wake up and realize that the world he is living in isn’t all that great. Prior to Montag talking to Faber he was just as willing to avoid talking about anything that happens. After Montag gets home from Faber’s house Mildred is there with her friends talking about what would happen to them once the war starts, Mrs. Phelps says how she doesn’t worry and how she lets her husband do all the worrying. Normally that wouldn’t be a bad thing to say she would just sound like she is trying to live her life worry free but then she says something that her husband told her, “He said, if I get killed off, you just go right ahead and don’t cry, but get married again, and don’t think of me”(Bradbury 91). He seems to think that he is going to die or else he wouldn’t have said this, but the fact that Mrs. Phelps doesn’t have any remorse, or any change of tone when she says this. She and her husband have both been married twice before this one, it seems that her husband is trying to make sure that if he dies then his wife will be taken care of after he dies. But this could be taken as her not mourning her husband, and just trying to get over him as fast as she can, to avoid talking about it. The way all the women are written in this book is making them sound ignorant and as if they can’t handle the truth of their society. It sounds like he is making them China dolls made of glass, to where everyone has to walk on eggshells around them and like they’re easy to break, which is one of the ways people avoid talking about things that happen.

The reason everyone believes she was killed was because of her extreme love of god and how strongly she believed in him. She was a very kind loving girl who was nice to everyone she met, so when she died it was extra hard on her classmates. After she died they covered her car in stuffed animals, crosses, flowers, poems, pictures, and more on her car. The students of Columbine did this many cars of those who died that day, they became such a strong school after this tragedy and it really shows how peoples deaths really have an impact on peoples lives.

Fahrenheit 451 has many examples of violence and although none of it takes place in schools in Fahrenheit 451, in our reality school violence is higher in 2018 and 2019 than in any other year prior. Fights in schools are becoming more common school shootings are becoming more and more expected as the years go on. In 2015-16 the percentage of recorded incidents out of every 1000 teenagers was 78.9% out of that 47.4 % of the incidents were reported to the police. In 2017 the number of school shootings was about 44, in 2018 that number went up by over half at 97 incidents (Incidents). Many of these shooters give off specific clues that if people would pay closer attention they would pick up. They could act violent towards other classmates, have no remorse for their actions, but they could also hide in plain sight these students could have friends and a great social life, they don't have to be loners who get bullied, they can have good families and a good life but feel something is wrong deep down and not tell anyone (Lopez). TJ Lane, for example, killed three students at Chardon High School in Ohio students after this he said, “He wasn’t an outcast and a friend described him as "a very normal, just [a] teenage boy."(Lopez). Many more shootings have happened not by people who were bullied but people who would fit in a crowd. Dylan Klebold was a Columbine shooter , after this happened, he said he was into sports, had great friends, and an extremely great family. Behind closed doors, he seemed normal but it’s when you look inside his room was where it got strange, he had multiple guns hidden in his room, prototypes for bombs, journals detailing the way he was feeling inside. All things that his mother Sue Klebold never noticed(TEDED). Parents have said before that their children who go through with this never showed any signs to the public, but if only they took a deeper look, they would most likely find almost the same things as what Dylan's mother found after her son died. Teachers, parents, and friends don’t understand the impact they can have on one person. Aaron Stark was almost one of these shooters he, unfortunately, did come from a broken home and a screwed up life. He was homeless for a time, and got into drugs and started drinking. He was planning to shoot up the school of those who bullied him until one friend showed him kindness. “I wasn’t going to survive that night if that hadn’t happened” Stark told Tur. “People reach out and sometimes they don’t even know the effect they’re going to have. A kind word, a hug, saying ‘Hey how are you, do you want to come have food with me? Come watch a movie?’ could literally save someone’s life”(Grey). From one friend doing something so simple as asking him if he wanted to come watch a movie with him, and becoming friends with Aaron stopped him from becoming a school shooter.

Tragedy of Columbine

On April 20th, 1999, 12 students and 1 teacher tragically died, with 23 more of their classmates wounded in a shooting at Columbine High School(Columbine). Dylan Klebold, and Eric Harris were responsible for the death and the wounded. Columbine was originally not meant to be a shooting it was actually a failed bombing attempt, the two boys had planted pipe bombs in the cafeteria sometime before the attack started but failed to detonate which saved hundreds of teenager’s lives.(Editors). They had waited in their cars to hear the bombs go off, but when they didn’t go off they grabbed the guns they had in their trunks and began their spree. They began outside shooting Rachel Scott who would be the first to lose her life, many more would soon follow. They made their way to the library where out of the 56 people in the there seven would be killed, and many more will be wounded. Many people would be shot multiple times which is a miracle they survived. Some people's injuries left them needing major surgeries, and even left some paralyzed. After Dylan and Eric had finished they returned to the library where they decided to kill themselves. The impact these boys had on their school was shocking, some kids decided to go homeschooled, but for the many who decided to come back to school had to deal with PTSD, for Craig Scott he lost his sister and two of his friends who he was sitting in the middle of. He had to deal with the feeling of knowing his friends died and he survived. His parents even had to deal with losing a daughter and knowing that their son was almost killed too. Many parents lost their children and some never even got to see them start to drive. The parents lost a piece of themselves that day and they can never get their children back. Changes in the bell sound had to be changed due to it could have made someone have an anxiety attack, even the food menus had to be changed. Their school became stronger due to this event they have endured, the loss of their friends had such an impact on them they built a memorial in honor of them, one of the homemade bombs that did go off burned half a tree outside of the building, this tree was a symbol for everyone who lost someone and everyone in the school. The tree showed that even something that is burned and broken at first will always heal and become stronger than before.
