Ready to hear the current news presentation by my classmate, I sat eager waiting to hear about current events. The person giving the presentation that day told our class about a growing disease, the Coronavirus. Many in my class were not worried, it seemed like it was no more than a flu-like virus, but some of the medical needs were not being met in China. However, not much later, the lethality of the new virus was revealed, I was obviously worried about what would happen next, but I figured it wouldn’t reach Florida too soon. Soon, there were cases in north florida, and before I knew it, in Fort Lauderdale. When we heard about the two cases in Fort Lauderdale was when it got really scary, I had to stop participating in The Broward Center Spotlights (our performance was one week away). Before I knew it, there were rumors all around school that American Heritage would be closing down if there were more cases in Broward County. Still, the number grew and we still had school. Many parents stopped sending their kids to school, picking them up early, overall, school felt different. Everything about school felt different, one day in particular. There was a specific day, where there were more absences than ever before, most of my friends weren’t at school, it was crazy! I called my mom and told her what happened, she was a bit shocked, but decided to pick me (and my sisters) up early. The second we left school, we received an email that school was cancelled for the next two weeks, and then we would begin online schooling until further notice. I was in complete shock and immediately called by best friends. After I got home that afternoon, we heard that the musical would be cancelled as well. From then on, our quarantine life began... Once schools were cancelled and social distancing became mandatory, the clubhouse shut down. My community looked empty, not full of life as I thought. However, I was very wrong. One time, my family and I decided to take a walk. When we left the house, we didn't see many people. However, when we got closer to the entrance, we saw people on lit up golf carts with their entire family. (Some of them blasting music) Families playing sports, and overall I saw people spending quality time with their family. Then I realized my neighborhood was more lively than ever. The sky was beautifully blue, the trees greener than ever. Even through these stressful times, people were making the best out of it. The Coronavirus has made an incredible impact on the world and will continue to do so. The absence of people driving has had a great impact on the environment. Today, I saw a YouTube video of people who are pro-quarantine vs. anti-quarantine. The thought of people wanting to reopen our community just for the sake of the economy was mildly frightening. In times like these, I completely believe that health and people’s welfare comes first. Doctors, and nurses are giving it their all, putting themselves in danger, to help people affected. I have two cousins who are doctors in Spain Hospitals. One of them deals with pediatric emergencies, and the other with pulmonary emergencies. Both of them were infected by the Coronavirus but since they are young, they had very mild symptoms. Their parents (my aunt and uncle) were extremely worried, and it was overall a terrifying time. (They have both recovered and are okay now) I also saw a news article about Florida beginning to re-open this brought back that same fear although my family would still social distance, even if everything re-opened 😂. Lastly, I saw another report saying that those who recover from COVID-19 are still not immune to the virus and could be infected again. I was extremely surprised since this is unlike many other viruses we’ve seen before.
