Montag Struggling

Depression and anxiety are two huge factors in Fahrenheit 451 Montag is faced with both of these issues. It doesn’t come out and clearly state it but we can pick it up by his actions. Montag stated “My feet, said Montag. I can’t move them. I feel so damn silly. My feet won’t move”(Bradbury 100). Montag was put in a situation were he became nervous and overwhelmed. Mildred was talking to Montag about his life he was thinking that he should go back to being a fireman but Mildred told him he must not. This shows anxiety because he didn’t know how to react he was stuck in the moment and became anxious. A big part of this is that Montag was afraid of making mistakes. Another time Montag felt anxiety and depression is when walking to the subway “by the time he reached the subway, there were vague stirrings of disease in him”(Bradbury 29). During this time Montag was searching for Clarisse something about her being gone made him feel different. Without him knowing where she was he felt sad and empty. These are both a use of depression and anxiety because in those moments his emotions were everywhere and he was frozen in time. Montag was stuck in situations that he didn’t know how to react to.

In Fahrenheit 451 depression is a big concept when it comes to Mildred. We are introduced to her being sad in the begging and by the end she grows a little stronger. As Montag walked into the room he noteced “The small crystal bottle of sleeping tablets which earlier today had been filled with thirty capsules which now lay uncapped and empty in the light of the tiny flare”(Bradbury 11). This is a big example, it shows that Mildred was so sad that she wanted to take her own life. Montag walked in and found her and called for help just like previous times. Mildred keeps putting Montag in the same situation a very sad situation that nobody wishes to be in. Another time Mildred showed a sign of depression “she’s dead. Let's talk about someone alive, for goodness sake”(Bradbury 68). This shows that she doesn’t like to talk about the sad things that happen in life. Mildred is a symbol it means gentle strength and english origin. The meaning of Mildred’s name does not suit her because she doesn’t act very strong throughout the book. These are a use of depression because it shows how mildred suffers and can’t control her feelings. Depression overcame Mildred in these situations she couldn’t handle her feelings anymore.

Mental illness is a big issue in today's society just as it was for the characters of Fahrenheit 451. Anxiety is so common that 1 in 5 adults suffer with this disorder each year. Other disorders that have to do with anxiety such as panic disorders affect about 6 million people. Anxiety is a growing disorder that more people deal with then we know. There is also panic disorder “People with panic disorder have sudden, repeated bouts of fear called panic attacks that last several minutes or more” (Depression In). Anxiety tends to run in families some people in the family develop it while others do not. “Mental health disorders such as dissociative disorder (DD) and dissociative identity disorder (DID) are now understood to be fairly common effects of trauma in early childhood”(Hurley). Depression is also a growing problem its something that can’t be escaped it is seen to becommon in familys almost hereditary. Teens become depressed when they feel that they arent living up to expectations. Its very good to have a support system “Teens need adult guidance more than ever to understand all the emotional and physical changes they are experiencing.”(Depression In). These are both growing disorders and when suffering with anxiety or depression it is important to get help. These are disorders that a lot of people suffer with nobody is alone.

Depression is a big disorder that a lot of people suffer with evryday as did people in Fahrenheit 451. “More than 19 million teens and adults in the United States suffer with depression” (“Depression.” MedlinePlus). Depression is a disorder of the brain it develops from a variety of things it can be genetic, biological and environmental. Normal everyday things such as getting out of bed can become difficult. People become depressed during periods of time when they are feeling low. Articles state “Pain or suffering of any kind,” he wrote, if long continued, causes depression and lessens the power of action”(Petrow). There are many things that can cause depression situations, behaviors, medications, you can also being depressed because its genetic. More women often suffer from things such as postpartum, pregnancy, and menstrual cycles. Depression usually starts in teens and young adults. According to research “By 14 years of age, depressive disorders are more than twice as common in girls as in boys”(mcgill). When men have depression they often become irritable and angry they also usally try to cope with it by drinking and taking drugs. Most children that suffer with depression ages range from 9 to 17 and 5% have major depressive disorder.

Unlike the characters of Farenheit 451, people in todays world take eniciative to help themselves. Some choice to take medications, someone choice to do therapy and others do both. “Cognitive behavior therapy is effective for mild to moderate childhood depression”(mcgill). When dealing with this disorder people have to do what is best for themselves everyone is different and deals with things differently. Research states that “Physicians choosing to prescribe antidepressants must obtain fully informed consent and closely monitor clinical progress, behavioral activation (e.g., impulsivity, daring, silliness, agitation), and suicidality, especially in the initial stages of treatment” (mcgill). Peole are diagnosed with how they should be treated based on what kind of depression they have and how long they’ve been dealing with it. Anxiety disorder is also treatable with therapy and medications or a combination of both. When a person is suffering from either of these disorders someone should be there for them and get the help best sutted for them. If medications and therapy do not work there are other options ECT and other brain stimulations are available. According to National Institute of Mental Health “ECT can provide relief for people with severe depression who have not been able to feel better with other treatments” (Depression.” National). It is very important to have support when going through treatment. Being active, setting goals, and being around friends can help someone going though treatment.

In Fahrenheit 451 the society is numb with sadness. Throughout history their community changed as a whole. As Clarrisa was stating “My uncle says his grandfather remembered when children didn’t kill each other”(Bradbury 27). This shows that people have become cruel and want to hurt each other even though it will cause others a lot of pain. It used to be a peacful kind society where everyone got along. Now in society people hurt each other without reason. Grey is a symbol because it symbolizes a darker color. In Fahrenheit 451 their world is dark and glomey everyone is sad and doesn’t handle their feelings well. “I’ve never known any dead men killed in a war. Killed jumping off buildings, yes, like Gloria’s husband last weak but from war? No”(Bradbury 91). This is a very big peice of information it shows that people comminting suicide is normal for them. People in their world are so unhappy that taking there own life seems like the best option. To the families of the people who are dying it seems so normal that they don’t become sad they are used to it.
