Post 1 - Describe the Mediterranean in 33CE

In 33CE the Mediterranean world was ruled over by the Roman empire. The romans controlled so much of the world because their focal point was on their military, who invaded majority of the Mediterranean. this went on for roughly five hundred years. In those times, the predominate languages used were Latin and Greek however some spoke Aramaic upon many other languages. Written communication was used by a small minority of romans to show wealth, power, status and intelligence. In ancient Rome, examples of different cultural and ethnic groups were Galileans, Judaism, Christianity, and polytheism. Because of the Roman architects, the roads built were efficient for transporting goods using things such as, carriages, coaches, etc. The Main regions throughout the empire were Cappadocia, Judea, Achaea and Sicilia, the main cities were Alexandria, Antioch and Rome.

The significance of Saul of Tarsus converting to Christianity was, he was raised strictly Jewish, so much so that he made a living off persecuting Christians and pursuing them. Saul was a man who stoned Christians as well as doing many other horrific things to them. One day he was pursuing a group of Christians on the way to Damascus and he was blinded by a light, it was then that Jesus spoke to him asking him why he persecuted him, that day he was baptised and became Paul. This was so significant because he went from being the hunter to being the hunted.

After the conversion of Saul to Paul, he decided to go on a journey to preach the word of the Lord, and on this journey he would walk 2253 kilometres. He started in Antioch, walked down to Seleucia, and then sailed to Cyprus’ main city, Salamis where he taught in the Jewish synagogues. Paul then made his way across the island, before setting sail to a city called Perga on the coastline of what is now known as Turkey. Then made his way to Iconium, Lystra where he was nearly killed and then Derbe. After this Paul walked walked back through Perga, Iconium, Lystra and then Derbe. He then made his way to Attalia which was an important harbour and commercial centre in his day, then he sailed across the Mediterranean Sea home.

Paul wrote many letters whilst imprisoned. they were written to the Romans, the Corinthians, the Galatians, the Ephesians, the Philippians, the Colossians and the Thessalonians. He wrote these letters because he wanted to spread the word of God to Christians all over the empire. The main messages in these letters were that the Christians should not lose faith even though they were constantly being persecuted and that they should not forget that Jesus died for them to receive eternal life in heaven.

Pauls message in the epistle I chose (Galatians 3:26-4:7) was that no matter your race, gender or anything else, as long as you live good and righteously, you will receive eternal life in heaven. I believe that this passage has a great message for younger people to take in, this message is applicable today because there are Christians all over the world of different races and ethnicity.
