Anyways, I wanted to come back to what you said in your last message. You said that all multicultural societies are basically the same. Although I can see where you are coming from, I disagree. See it this way, multicultural societies are build upon a basis set by the „original“ culture. Just because other cultures bring a piece of theirs into the UK for example, it doesn‘t make the British people less characteristically British. Would you honestly claim that the British are the same as the Americans? I doubt it. Both are very much multicultural, yet you can somewhat easily distinguish between something one might classify as „British“ from what some others might classify as „American“. These new cultures simply enhance and widen the originals culture‘s horizon, potentially even helping it become a greater version of itself, yet still very much recognizable as what it began. Sorry if I started rambling a bit too much, we also have that topic in my English class right now, so I guess I go carried away. Either way, hope to hear from you soon!

Analyse Cat‘s attitude towards …

how he depicts cat and

Narrative technique and use of language

	⁃

In the novel Blue Skies written by T.C. Boyle, published in the year 2023, the author follows the theme of climate change and its potential consequences. The protagonist of this story is an American woman called Catherine currently living in Florida, as she faces all kinds of — primarily climate related — hardships throughout the span of many years. In the following I will analyze the way the author chose to depict Catherine, as well as her attitude towards jobs. He uses Catherine to criticize childish way of viewing things, by, for example, only living in the moment. For this, I will focus on using the first chapter of the book, as it gives great insights into the character, thanks to it serving primarily as an introduction to the character.

The author describes Catherine as someone whose decisions are dictated by her impulses. This is, among other things, achieved through the choice of words like describing Catherine‘s actions „impulse buying“. She buys a snake without thinking much about potential consequences and costs attached to it. It clearly depicts the „living in the moment“ mindset Catherine possess.

T.C. Boyle also uses choice of words to depict Catherine’s irresponsible and childish side. Like it is seen when she compares living snakes to „jewelry“. It shows that Catherine views them as nothing more than an accessory or toy, instead what they truly are. This plays into the author‘s criticism on the shallow and irresponsible worldview many people share.

Catherine cares primarily about surface level things, such as appearance, popularity and fame. As is primarily visible through her choice to be an influencer. But also, her description of how she felt about Todd‘s mother‘s death plays into this as well (page 16). In those lines, she did not seem to feel all that sad for Todd thanks to now being able to live in the house of his mother with him. It shows a materialistic side of her, one that is also not so empathetic. All this plays into the critique of modern society within the book, as those are negative traits, often seen in society.

	⁃	passive, surface level, disconnected

Monologue:

Huh, cat‘s getting married. A new chapter of her life begins. Yet, I don‘t truly know how to feel about it. I am proud, like a father should be. That‘s for sure. But this concept is still hard to fully grasp.

I was never the wedding type of guy. Sure, I can do the formalities just fine. Smile, compliment and help out wherever I am needed. Ottilie wants my input; I give my input. That‘s that.

But that doesn’t matter now. In the end it‘s not about me. It‘s about Catherine. This is her wedding — her day. If she needs me, I will be here to help, like always. When the world around you seems to crash and burn, the little things are what count. A day where you come together and celebrate an occasion.

So I will sit here, in the sun, for as long as I have to. As long as it means Catherine will feel supported, not alone. I am sure everything will be fine.

What part of society does the author criticize:

The author of „Blue Skies“ criticizes the self-centered point of view many people in society have. During the Cat and Todd’s wedding all but Ottelie seemingly act or think in ways that is only about themself. Cooper is drowning himself in self-loathing about his lost arm, even cheating on his then-girlfriend during the wedding. Todd is stoned and seemingly only cares his image. Frank barely does anything except for acting as an extension of Ottlie. And even Cat doesn‘t seem to think about how the disastrous wedding effected not just here, but everyone involved.

Additionally, T.C. Boyle criticizes the traditional roles of a mother and father. While Ottelie is the stereotypical caring-mother doing everything and stressing over things not going to plan, Frank is simply there. He supports the family, but more in a passive manner. Whenever something happens it is Ottelie that actively tries to help, usually being the one to get Frank involved in the first place.

Creative Part Conclusion 18.11.2024

During the pool scene in the book „Blue Skies“ we see a general lack of care and proper reaction from the people present to the heat stroke one of the guests is experiencing. The author intends to show the tiredness of the people after having experienced so many terrible things around them. Like the consequences of climate change. They have become numb to the point that a person having a stroke not even causing any significant panic among them. It is both a criticism and a warning. Telling the reader what could happen to us when drowning in crisis after crisis, while telling us how heartless and passive people can be.

Analyse how the author presents the protagonist focusing on narrative technique.

Authors who use this technique are aiming for emotional and psychological truth: they want to show a snapshot of how the brain actually moves from one place to the next.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————

In the following I will analyze how the authors decided to present the protagonists of the novel „Blue Skies“ and the short story „Mrs Dalloway in Bond Street“ by focusing on narrative technique. The reason for those two characters to be chosen for this analysis is due to the comparison made between them in the book „Blue Skies“. Ottilie compares herself to Mrs Dalloway. However, these characters seem to be opposites of each other. This will be the thesis I will aim to prove within this analysis.

„Blue Skies“, written by T. C. Boyle and released on the 16. May of 2023, is a novel which follows the themes of climate change, its potential consequences and how we humans react to or even cope with it. In the novel we follow a family and see how climate change is affecting the world and, in turn, them through their eyes. One of these characters is Ottilie, who is the mother of the family, giving a perspective from such a role on the situation. Although the book has, as in implied, arguably multiple protagonists, I will focus on her for the sake of the analysis, for reasons that will become apparent later on.„Mrs Dalloway in Bond Street“ is a short story written by Virginia Woolf and published in the year 1924, which has the set its focus on the politics of the time, as well as relationships in a more general sense.

The Media and you

a.

The question, whether or not my social media consumption is balanced is dependent on one‘s definition of the word „balanced“. Also, there is a massive discrepancy between the types of media and the amount I spent with them. Overall, however, I am aware that my consumption of arguably uninformative media, such as video games and shows, is significant. I would even say too much, as it takes away up to 90% of my free time while giving little value beyond entertainment. A significant majority of my free time is spent on it. One could therefore argue, it could be considered unbalanced.

Media such as articles takes up a less significant portion of my free time. Although I would like to allocate more time away from my other media use towards reading articles. A goal which is fueled by my general interest in political topics and similar, but is currently overshadowed by my laziness. But even then, my media would remain unbalanced, just in a different manner.

—————————
OUTLINE

In the article „Don‘t demonize social media, it can be a blessing for teens with problems“, which was released in the year 7th of December 2018 on the website of „The Guardian“, Micha Frazer Carroll discusses social media usage and whether or not it should be suppressed. In the following I outline the advantages and disadvantages of social media listed by the author.

Beginning with the disadvantages, the author mentions the studies-backed connection between social media usage and mental health issues. According to the author, young people have a tendency to compare themselves to others, which is made easier through social media. It is considered an unhealthy practice. The supposed pressure to always be available, created by many social media apps, has often been used as a possible reason for making people more anxious and sleep-deprived. Lastly, social media makes it possible to bully someone even while the victim is at home.

When it comes to the advantages there are also a multitude of things. Firstly, social media creates places where young people can find like-minded individuals, as well as giving people a safe space to vent about one‘s problems. Due to the vastness of the internet and therefore social media you can find sources which spread positive advice and images, not only negative ones.

————————-
ANALYSE

The author portrays a more optimistic attitude towards the topic of social media. In the following I will try finding examples within the text, to prove this to be the case. To do so, I will primarily focus on her use of language, while also taking a closer look at the general structure of the article.

The author has structured the text in a manner where she begins by listing the opposite side of her opinion. This is used so the author may refute or address the points of the opposite side, as shown at multiple points within the article (example: line 24-27). Through this approach her arguments appear stronger and more believable, as the counter points have already been addressed. Not to mention the fact the article ends on her side of the argument, making it more likely to stick with the reader, as it was the last thing they read. It is something called „recency bias“. All of this shows conveys the author‘s attitude towards the topic at hand.

During the article the author uses at different sections are more formal mode of presentation, while using a more informal one at other parts. This use of language can be best seen when putting the arguments for and against social media present in the text next to each other. The arguments defending the usage of social media feel more personal. The difference between the two side of the argument is created through the significantly higher use of the first person with in the pro-argument side (example: line 37) and choice of words such as „And yes, …“ (line 50) which are more informal than not. On the other hand, the contra arguments are primarily based on things others say and statistics (example: 9-10), making it appear less personal and therefore more distant. Through this the authors positive attitude towards the topic becomes apparent.

Within the article the author uses personal stories within the article. These are used to backup her position on the matter of social media, as seen in lines 38-43. All of these stories have a positive connotation towards the topic of social media. It does not only help the authenticity of the article, but it also highlights the positive attitude towards social media the author has within the text.

To conclude, the article uses different methods to make their attitude towards the topic of social media clear, while strengthening it at the same time. Although she does recognize the dangers of social media, she does not see it as something that is supposed to be suppressed.

Analyse the development displayed in the diagram.

The diagram „Forms of new media used by U.S. adults“ released in the year 2021 by pewresearch visualizes data on the amount of social media used by U.S. adults and its development from 2018 to 2021. For this, the x-axis is used to depict six different social media platforms sorted from left to right by the amount of usage amount U.S. adults. The y-axis, on the other hand, is used to represent the percentage of how many U.S. adults use the thing in their respective category. The chosen type of diagram is a column diagram, with 4 differently colored columns used for each social media platform. Each color represents the data on the usage of the social media platform at a different year. Blue stands for 2018, red for 2019, green for 2020 and yellow for 2021 data. Right above each of those columns you can see the exact percentage it is supposed to represent

In the following I will analyze the development of the platforms visibly displayed in the diagram at hand.

For starters, Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp have shown no significant development in the span of 4 years depicted in the diagram. The biggest difference in those cases from 2018 and the year 2021 is 1,5% in the case of Twitter, which was an decrease overall. From the data one can infer that those social media platforms have managed to keep a steady user-base over these four years, meaning they kept being relevant in the minds of many adults.

On the other hand, the biggest outlier when it comes to growth among the listed platforms is YouTube. It has seen a significant increase in the years 2020 and 2021. Going from 73% in 2018 all the way to 81% in 2021. This could have its origins in the pandemic which forced many people to stay inside during those years, forcing many to spend their times through alternative methods. Considering YouTube‘s position as a purely entertainment-centered platform, unlike platforms like Twitter or Instagram, which focus more on the socializing and discussing side of things, they were the biggest winners of the Corona pandemic, as entertainment is many people seek when bored.

Lastly, TikTok is also represented in the diagram. Unfortunately, there is no data available on the usage of U.S. adults of the platform TikTok before 2021. Therefore, it is difficult to infer much from so little data, except that the usage is in-line with platforms like Twitter and WhatsApp (around 20%). The reason for these (comparatively) low numbers, even though it also was an entertainment platform, much like YouTube, could be due to it being a newcomer to the scene, resulting in it not being as prevalent as some more established platforms. Especially since teenagers represent a significant portion of the TikTok user-base and those would not be represented within the data, as it focuses on adults instead. These adults grew up with other platforms in their youth and have taken them with them into adulthood. We might see a sharp increase in TikTok’s adult user base the future once these teenagers grow up or as it becomes more established in the main stream media as the years pass by.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————

Discussion

In the following I will discuss a topic quite prevalent in our modern times. Are social media platform the place to be? For this I will look at this question from both sides of the argument. In the last few years, especially during the Corona-Pandemic, we have seen a steady increase, or at the very least no significant decrease, in social media usage. This can be seen in diagrams like „Forms of new media used by U.S. adults“ by pewresearch which depicts the usage of a array of social media platform among U.S. adults in the years 2018 to 2021. Here exactly that can be seen, making the question at hand even more prevalent.

Mediation: Article about Donald Trump

Text 1 14.50:
Trump‘s deportation plans are unclear, yet most suspect some form of mass deportation to happen sooner rather than later. Especially since the man himself stated that to be one of his goals. Therefore, some places are already preparing for the mass deportation to happen.

Text 2 15.10:
Trump has stated that his mass deportation plans will commence very soon after his inauguration, with one of his goals stated to be kicking out all the criminals. It is still unclear where exactly these mass deportations will start, especially since Donald Trump stayed very vague on that matter.

Comic Full Analysis:

The comic, of which the name is unknown to me, was made by the artist Britt and released on creators.com on the 25th of November 2024. The central theming in this picture is about Trump‘s deportation plans and its affects on people who have lived in the USA for generations. To prove this thesis I will first describe and then analyze the different elements present in the comic.

For starters, on the right of the comic one can see a large round man with orange hair and in a pilgrim outfit saying „Drop the food and get on the bus“. This man is most likely Donald Trump as the hair and skin color align with the common ways of depicting him. To the right of Trump you can see a grey colored bus with „Deportation Express“ written on it. Further to the right of the comic you can see a building in the background and a group of people eating at a table in the foreground. The group of people seem to be wearing clothing used to usually depict indigenous people, making it very likely that they are supposed to represent them. Lastly, in the top left corner one can see a text box stating „Trump at the first thanksgiving“.

The fact this is about Trump’s deportation plans is visible through the depiction of Trump with what is stated by him, as well as the presence of the deportation express. The current deportation plans, which might even include people who have been born in the USA, is being put into other circumstances to point out its ridiculousness. Those different circumstances being the first thanksgiving, as evident by the text box in the upper left corner and the depiction of Trump as a pilgrim, for example. The deportation of people with migratory background who have lived here their entire life is being compared to being like deporting indigenous people. Both have lived their entire life here and both their ancestors migrated to America a long time ago. Even if it is a much longer time ago in the case of the indigenous people. Additionally, the choice of using thanksgiving underlines the fact the people being deported are not necessarily doing anything wrong. They are eating with the „pilgrims“ in a friendly manner, yet they are still being deported by pilgrim Trump. All this shows the ridiculousness of Trump’s deportation endeavors, only further underlined by the depiction of Trump as a very fat, orange, almost ball shaped man.

In my personal opinion, I believe this comic to have taken an interesting perspective through which to criticize Trump‘s deportation plans. The choice of comparing the currently affected immigrants with the American indigenous people is slightly extreme, as the indigenous people have lived here for much longer. However, it is supposed to be extreme to properly get the point across. Overall, I agree with their point, aa I believe mass deportation is not only inhumane, but also terrible for the American economy overall.

—Comic Analysis—

	⁃	bottom right: indigenous people
	⁃	middle: deportation bus
	⁃	all about thanksgiving
⁃	deporting people who lived here for generations, even the ones who were friendly
⁃	Big orange man: Trump -> Person highly in favor of mass deportation
⁃	wearing clothing associated with the first colonists

News avoidance in times of media fatigue (mediation)

The question of media and the influence it can have on people is almost as old as most forms of media. Two linked phenomenons are becoming increasingly more prevalent, those being „media fatigue“ and „media avoidance“. In today‘s article I will take a closer look at these phenomenons by using a recent interview by German neuroscientist professor Maren Urner as a basis. In the end, I wanna tackle the issue of how to one could try and prevent those from happening.

Firstly, what is media fatigue and how is it linked to media avoidance? Media fatigue is what happens when people are constantly bombarded by primarily negative news from all kinds of media sources. You get tired from hearing constant negativity, often leading to stress and creating a feeling of hopelessness. These feelings can often lead to avoidance of most media, for example to avoid these feelings.

The reason for why this is so prevalent in our current times is due to the media‘s focus on mostly negative news, oftentimes preferring such news over positive topics. Its origins lie in what is known as „Negativity Bias“, which is intrinsically part of us humans. This bias leads to us humans searching and focusing on the negative things surrounding us way more than anything else. An aspect originally meant to look for potential danger.

How can you try and prevent all of this? Stopping the constant stream of negativity would be the most impactful way of trying to combat these phenomenons. However, there are also different approaches. Putting a great focus on teaching people on improving their critical thinking and encouraging the exchange between journalists and their readers/viewers. That way they can more critically absorb the information present in the media being consumed.

What influence do deep fakes have on democracy?

Deep fakes, which are forms edited or fully generated media, have become increasingly better and more frequent in the last few years. Therefore the question arose, what influence deep fakes could have on our democracy, if any at all. One of the most important aspects to look at would be the potential of spreading misinformation using deep fakes. This can be done by impersonating trusted and/or important individuals to spread this information, hoping for others to fall for it. A proper democracy needs a population which is informed using reliable sources. This has become increasingly difficult thanks to the internet, where misinformation and fake news is common place. Deep fakes only onto this very problem, some even getting news coverage questioning its validity, while spreading it to a wider audience.

To conclude, deep fakes, like any other form of disinformation, is dangerous to the long term stability of a democratic society. People might soon not know what they can believe if the technology of deep fakes improves in the upcoming years. It is therefore important that we educate ourselves on the topic of seeing through forms of disinformation.

What is art?

It is a artificially created medium through which a certain idea, concept or message is expressed to an audience.

author: The New Yorker

topic: police brutality/accountability

production: minimalistic, informative > spectacle

———————————————————————————

Question: Is the short-movie „Incident“ something that could be considered art?

The documentary short-film „Incident“ is a movie made out of real footage showing an unjustified killing of a civilian by an police officer. While watching the movie the question arises, whether this can even be considered to be art or if it nothing more than CCTV footage jumbled together. In the following I will discuss that exact question, depicting both sides of the argument before ending it with my own conclusion. I will begin with the arguments against the idea this could be considered art. Afterwards I will articulate the arguments of the other side.

One could argue a movie should be about creating something new and not just be a compilation of something that already existed. One of the concerns one could have when questioning the validity of calling the movie art, is the lack of creating found in the „Incident“. None of the footage was created by the author, it was only taken and combined with other already existing footage. The only thing directly added to the footage is the text and subtitles seen on top of some of the footage.

On the other hand, one has to consider that even video editing is often considered a type of art. Footage can be edited in a manner to convey a message. Oftentimes a message which was not easily seen or maybe not even there at all in the original footage. Considering all of this, one could therefore argue, the „Incident“ is in fact art. After all, different CCTV footage was edited together showing, for example, the different reactions to the killing of the man. All this creates an effect on the viewer.

Additionally, intent plays a significant role in differentiating art and not-art. Simple a collection unedited CCTV footage of a street randomly chosen and shown to a viewer by a computer is not art, as it has no intent behind it. There is no message that is being conveyed. If, however, a human made a selection of specific CCTV footage fitting to a topic and edited them together with the goal of showing the viewer a certain problem they are passionate about, then there is intent behind it. Therefore, it has a message and by definition could be considered art. It isn‘t the thing used in an art piece which makes art, it is the artist behind it and his intentions.

Dear Bob,

you recently told me about your school project concerning the future of work in Europe. I became interested myself and decided to search for information on the topic and found an article specifically regarding the situation surrounding people with migratory background. Unfortunately, it is in German. Thus I decided to outline for you all information about the difficulties migrants face within the german job market and current as well as future measures to improve their situation.

Once a person from another country arrives in Germany their biggest hurdle, once they receive a work permit, seems to often be the lack of language skills in the German language and the lack of higher levels of education or, in some cases, any education at all. It takes a lot of time to improve one‘s German skills while also potentially having go once more to school to properly graduate. Sadly, they often do not have this this, as any fear they might be forced to leave Germany at any moment making them less willing to go through the whole process to begin with or believing not having a job could lead to them being forced to leave.

Additionally, going through job training or even studying involves a period of time in which you make not a lot of money (if any at all). Due to this, many rather immediately try to enter the job market instead of going through the hassle of learning for a job. Especially if taking into account the aforementioned constant fear of being forced to leave soon. A proposed method of trying to combat this within the article was elevating successful people migratory backgrounds to show others that it is possible to reach such a level of success.

The uncertainty regarding their status in Germany also affects the willingness of certain places to accept them into their job training. Many would rather train someone they know will probably stay, rather than someone who might be forced to leave the country the very next day. One way of trying to address this issue proposed in the text was to increase communication between the school as well as other …

9b, 11 + focus of narrative technique and use of language

Outline:

The extract taken from the novel „Homeland“ by Cory Doctorow depicts a situation of the main character called Marcus, in which he contemplates with his friends how he should leak highly confidential information to the public without endangering himself. At the end Kylie presents a solution to the problem, which I will now outline in the following paragraphs.

Kylie proposes to create an array of new accounts on different platforms. They then plan to use these to spread the information by privately writing anyone who has any type of reach or connections. The idea behind this proposal is that at least one person will take notice and begin spreading it further. She also bases her plan in the belief that humans are intrigued by such information, making it very likely someone will pick their story up. Lastly, it does not pose as large of threat to the whistle-blowers (in this case Marcus) safety, as he would be using new accounts and let other people do the distributing to the public.

Analysis:

The thesis of my analysis is that Kylie represents business-like point of view on the concept of a whistle-blower.

The character Kylie is introduced to be a colleague of one of Marcus‘ friends (Jolu). Her appearance, as well as other basic facts about her are not mentioned within the extract given.

The author creates a connection to business strategies, which creates this serious and business-like atmosphere. Normally comparisons are used to emphasize something, which is also true here. However, the business-like feeling is also accomplished by Kylie making a comparison between whistle-blowing information and advertisements of products throughout her monologues, as seen when she compares their information to a product that needs to be sold (line 50).

Furthermore, the presentation of how Kylie speaks to the others seems almost like someone holding a monologue during a company briefing. One of the many ways to use a monologue is to create depth and insight into the character. In this excerpt it helps differentiates Kylie from the rest and emphasizes her point, while also getting across a feeling of being methodical. It is visible by comparing the amount of her lines to those of the other characters, while also not being interrupted (line 39 ff.) . Therefore making it seem more like a monologue.
