Our health is determined by many different factors. Our body and emotions are all effected by our environment and our genetics. Environmental influence effects what we do, eat, and even our emotions. Stated in chapter one, “Heredity plays an important role, but your environment (including things like the foods you eat and the people you interact with) also influences your abilities and interests" (Impact of Environment and Genetics, 4). If we are in an environment that causes us stress we could be overwhelmed. Sounds can cause stress to some people even though some may not think that it can. This is an environmental influence that can effect someone's health, “Noise can increase stress, which over the long term can lead to disorders as serious as heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke" (Impact of Environment and Genetics, 3). Stress effects our health in a long term way. Stress can cause high blood pressure. One way to help prevent the risk of getting high blood pressure is to reduce our stress. We first need to analyze what causes our stress and get rid of it or stay away from it. This will help ensure us a healthier life for the future. Genetics will also effect our health. Mutations are one way that can effect our genetic health, “Researchers have identified more than 4,000 diseases that are caused by mutations" (Impact of Environment and Genetics, 4). These mutations can either show in that person or that persons offspring. Our genetics determine if we have a disease, carry one, or nothing at all. It also determines things like allergies and how healthy we are internally. You can be a genetic carrier of a disease but you can pass that disease to your offspring and they can have that disease. Health care impacts our health in a big way. Health care allows us to receive care that we need to get better and live a long healthy life. But some people do not have health care and they cannot receive the treatment that they need. People without health care are more likely to have these problems, “Less likely to receive medical care, More likely to die early, and More likely to have poor health status" (Health Care, 6). This will effect everyone, in that family, lives. This also goes along with health status. The overall health status of a patient is better when they have health care and can seek treatment. Access to health care impacts many different parts of someone's life, “Access to health care impacts: Overall physical, social, and mental health status, Prevention of disease and disability, Detection and treatment of health conditions, Quality of life, Preventable death, and Life expectancy" (Health Care, 6). When people feel better they live a healthier life because they know how to stay healthy and find exercise that is right for them. Another step that a person can take to ensure a healthy life is to get health care that is right for you and that provides good treatment. Everyone takes risks throughout their lives. But some take riskier behaviors than others. Risky behaviors can be caused by peer pressure. The person that is being pressured into doing something should stand up for themselves and ask if they really want to do this. To reduce the consequences that they will face they should step back and think through what they want to do, “Sometimes decisions that turn out not to be so good are often made when young people (and adults) rush into making a decision or the decision is one which is more an outcome of peer pressure rather than one in which you have taken 'time out' to think through" (Consequences of Unhealthy Behaviors, 10). Looking at what could happen by taking a risk is another way that someone could ensure a healthy life because they could be putting an end to injury or even death. Overall, this chapter showed many ways that our health is being effect and it also showed how to prevent consequences and live a healthier life.
