When people think of Emily Dickinson, they think of the mysteries behind her writing. In the poem, she was able to show a serious and somewhat rebellious tone. "Unmoved -- an Emperor be kneeling Upon her Mat--" (Dickinson). This quote shows that she's denying the love that is offered to her by Emperor in a rebellious way when she could've accepted the love and been with him. Using words like "unmoved" shows that she's not phased by anything given/offered to her.

Emily Dickinson used a handful of figures of speech for her poem. One example could be when she's talking about the soul and the repetition of the letter S. "The Soul selects her own Society --" (Dickinson). This example could also count as a personification of the soul because Dickinson referred to the soul as a person who can make their own choices. This contributes to the poem because it shows that her soul alone can make life decisions.

Emily Dickinson uses images such as a shut door and stone. These images relate to each other because they are both things that close off an area. The door and the stone represents the barriers Emily set to keep herself away from the outside world. "The Soul selects her own Society -- Then, shuts the Door--"(Dickinson). In this quote, Emily shows that she chose her solidarity life and that she herself put up that barrier.

The theme of this poem is self-reliance. In the poem, Emily is not bothered by the love offered because she keeps her life reserved and closed off. "Then -- close the Valves of her attention Like Stone" (Dickinson). This quote shows that no one will be able to open the door that leads to her attention. The ending "Like Stone" refers to never changing her mind like the phrase "set in stone." The poem can also be described as "Nothing beats independence."
