Domain 7: Profession Practice

For me, the most relevant competency standard was standard 12.3. The purpose of the standard is to provide a high ethical practice when proving care to refugees. Access and equality is important to refugees as they are coming from a different country and may feel out of place in Australia so equity should be upheld in a high standard. Effective communication to me is a principle that means a lot when talking to a patient who is a refugee or migrant as they might be scared, and not understanding care plans or simply what the clinician is saying can be stressful. Getting an interpreter that is informed of the situation can be an efficient way to provide the best possible outcome. I have improved my understanding of professional practice involving Refugees and migrants by being aware of the competency standards. When reading domain 7 I have become aware that allowing my refugee to express their own values and beliefs allows them to feel safe in my care. I have also learnt that I have to respect any influence that might impact a patient’s decision on their healthcare plan such as different cultural health opinions and also being aware and letting them make their own decisions with no judgement. I now feel that I am more capable of caring for those patients of a different culture to me as I have learnt to respect their culture even if I don’t have the same beliefs as them and allow them to be able to feel safe in my care by letting them tell me if they have any requirements when it comes to providing them care. This skill is essential to me in the workplace because I will come across a range of different cultures with different reasons for being in a hospital in Australia so being able to know how to care for them and knowing the principles of care is a high priority for me.

Culturally Responsive Clinical Practice: Working with People from Migrant and Refugee Backgrounds COMPETENCY STANDARDS FRAMEWORK FOR CLINICIANS.
Principle health issues that Afghanistan refugees face

Australia has a long history of welcoming Refugees into the country particularly ‘Afghanistan’. Poor health and Malnutrition are common amongst newly refuged Afghanistan refugees as pre- migration exposure in Afghanistan was very harsh and a lot of families were starving due to their food source constantly being destroyed by natural disasters which Increased the prices of food severely. Due to having little access to food a lot of the refugees that come to Australia have Anaemia as they had little to no access to food causing them to have problems with their iron levels. Treatment for Anaemia can be as simple as iron supplements, or medications are administered. The most common and economical medication is ferrous iron salts which is administered orally. Intestinal parasites are commonly found as a health concern for Afghanistan refugees in Australia because Afghanistan is a very unhygienic place due to the contaminated water and soil. A lot of Afghanistan families are affected by parasites and even when they migrate to Australia the Migration camps are very close and crowded so parasites are easily transmitted. The specific treatment for the common Parasite seen in Afghanistan refugees is Giardia intestinalis drugs such as Metronidazole. Afghanistan refugees come from a low resource country that is the least medically equipped country in the world, they have vaccination rates that are severely low. Vaccinations of Polio have partially hit hard in Afghanistan as there was a nation ban of door-to-door vaccinations since 2018. Due to Medicare when refugees come to Australia, they have Catch up vaccinations done so their missed immunisation of polio will be done.

Australian Refugee Health» Primary Care for People of Refugee Backgrounds. https://refugeehealthguide.org.au/

Department of Home Affairs Website.
