Value Forms
Artist: Rocky Art
2019

As to how a painting enables a person to see the given art with much attention, that is where the role of the elements come in. The elements are made out of seven particular parts, where we are able to see how the visual components of the painting is composed of. In those seven elements, there is a particular element called the “form”. As to how form is to be seen as something that we are able to see in sculptures because of its own three-dimensional structure, in terms of seeing the form in a painting, the three-dimensional form takes place, despite having a flat surface in its canvas. The illusion of a three-dimensional form is conveyed through the use of lighting, shadows, values and tones in the painting itself.

(Top)
Title: David with the head of Goliath
Artist: Caravaggio

Year: c.1610

Medium: Oil on canvas

Location: Galleria Borghese, Rome

Dimensions: 49 in × 40 in

125 cm × 101 cm

(Bottom)
Ancient Egyptian Fresco

In the history of painting the traditional flat representation of the form can be seen through the mural paintings, which we can see in the walls, floors, and ceilings to show one’s belief or expression. One example is the Egyptian frescoes; the frescoes depict different stories and activities of the lives of the Egyptians. The mural paintings were two-dimensional and they are only made with the subject of a frontal and profile view. The frescoes were only made and painted by hand into these concrete walls that enabled such two-dimensional figures.

Then later on, we can see a new concept of the traditional two-dimensional paintings within the 15th and 16th century. Such as the artist like Caravaggio who explored the use of three-dimensional form through the usage of contrast between light and dark or also known as the chiaroscuro. It had heavily influenced the portrayal of emotions and drama which can be seen through his paintings. An example of it was David with the head of the Goliath which is one of the greatest works of Caravaggio. He exemplifies a deeper meaning through the painting by emphasizing the visuals. Such as to how David shows his expression that was more emphasized through the light and shadows. It had given a certain meaning and drama, that enabled the viewers to see the thought of what David was thinking. Then later on Caravaggio and other artists, have a certain type of influence in the art world. It gave a different meaning through the tradition two-dimensional form of the murals, and now to the three-dimensional form, such as when we use the concept of the chiaroscuro.

It also led to defining what a painting meant when we are inclining it to the word beautiful. Such as when we are to see the different elements like form to define the beauty in that specific word. It is not only based on our perception, but through the process of knowing that is beautiful through the forms. Such as to how the color, line, and space are part of the forms. We are now able to see how one maintains as a standard of the word "beautiful". An example would be the works of Caravaggio, as to how it is known as one of the works that made the chiaroscuro. It also exemplifies as one of the most beautiful works by experts, because it brings out the beauty in our senses. It interacts with its lines, colors, shapes, etc. which made it known as one of the most beautiful artworks there is.

From that, we can see how the form of painting had changed throughout the years. Now, we can see paintings as a three-dimensional form through the concept of modern art, such as the three-dimensional illusion art that we can see today. Wherein the art form is mostly used through the contrasting light and shadows to make an illusion of a three-dimensional form or structure. Also on how the form has the lines, color and space to bring out emotions, meaning, and drama to a painting. These things are a part of the forms in a painting, which enabled them to contribute as to how we can see the beauty in a painting today.

Title: Hapag ng Pag-asa (Table of Hope)
Artist: Joey Velasco
Medium: Oil on painting
Location: Cebu city, Philippines
Dimension: 48X96
Year:2007

On the year 2007, Joey Velasco made a painting called the Hapag ng Pag-asa, that made all people in awe. It was a painting that was inspired by the well-known "The Last Supper" by Leonardo da Vinci. The painting by Da Vinci was about the part where Jesus had told his apostles that someone will be betraying him. It led the apostles to be baffled on the idea of someone betraying the Lord, because they had sworn to follow him through the end. From that explanation, we can see how the Da Vinci's Last Supper was different from Joey Velasco's Hapag ng pag-asa. The inspiration from the Last Supper was made but his 12 apostles were street children in the poorest areas in the Philippines. They were dressed in old worn-out dressing, that made them the street children that we had seen in the streets. It had a modern perspective from it, that made us realize the concept of being much more blessed in our lives. It led to the compassion for those who are around us that enabled such love from one painting. From that perspective, it led the viewers to see in such awe because of how they had felt such a deeper connection between the painting itself. It had given a heartfelt response by the people who saw it because of what Velasco had said, which was, “This painting reveals a story of greater hunger than a plate of rice could satisfy. What these children are starved for is love."

From the painting, we can see such forms, such as line, color, and space. These are the things that made the painting more noticeable to those who viewed it.

Line

As we can see the lines are being represented through the table, clothing, and food from the table itself. It created the linear perspective in which we can look upon the image of Christ at the center. In the painting, we are also able to recognize the images of the children on the left and right side of the image. They were able to be recognized because they were made into the lines of movement. The boys were made to look towards the left side of the subject as to how they are looking afar. Then, we are also able to see the lines that are interpreted in the clothings. Such as the clothing of the boy with the blue shirt or Jesus Christ in the center of the table, we can see texture to those lines. It had given them such a realistic feal into it, by adding different types of lines.

Color

The color can be seen throughout the painting itself, it had created such colors that enabled the painting to be noticeable. On the foreground, we can see the colors, such as the shades of brown, blue, white and black. The different tones had created a sense of depth, such as the skin tone of the people themselves. As to how Jesus had a lighter tone and when it transitions to the farthest part of the painting, it had added a certain type of shadow in it. Then there is also the different shades of blue which can be found in the children's clothes and the table. The blue tone had made the effect of a very light and peaceful sense into the painting. Then there is also the color black, which can be mostly seen through the background of the painting. The blackness in the background, had made the lighter tone colors brighter than they usually are. One example is how it was used in the halo above Jesus' head. If the color at the background was somewhat in the shade of a light color, the halo wouldn't be that dominant in terms of its color. That is why the halo can be seen through the panting, that somewhat indicates that Christ is both man and human. Then there is also the color of brown which can be seen throughout the image. The color that was seen was from the food that was in the table. It had given such a thought that the brown tone was mostly used as a way to treat the given subject with a sense of a rustic feel. As to how the jars and glass were seen as something that was used for quite some time, and as to how the tables we seen in much the same way. Then lastly, the light and darkness are seen through the children and also Jesus himself. As to how the image of Jesus has the brightest light of them all, the sense of making him the person to be looked upon, such as how some of the children were looking into his face. Overall the painting had created a sense of peace, despite having the light and dark shadows from the image itself. The colors had created such peaceful tones because of how it focused more on the lighter shades, such as how blue and brown can be seen through the painting.

Space

The Space in the painting is mostly seen through how the effect made the background more flat. It had created a sense of three-dimensional space, that enabled the images of the children and Jesus to be seen. The Hapag ng pag-asa had a different sense of space rather than the original The Last Supper by Da Vinci. The Last Supper had an element of a larger space, because of the illusion of including a foreground, middleground, and background. The painting by Velasco didn't include all three, he had included the use of a foreground and a background. Through that, it had created a smaller space and one of the things that contributed such space was the flat background. Then another part of the painting's space was how it was created as if it was created in an unrealistic world. Because of the reason that it had a background that didn't have the natural elements of nature, such as trees and clouds.
