I'm an English teacher from Melbourne, Australia. My school context is somewhat particular, as the Mac.Robertson Girls' High School is one of very few select entry government schools in the state, giving students unique opportunities to mutually extend themselves and experience growth as learners. The IB was launched at the school last year, based on a sense that the values of the program are a close match with the direction in which the Principal wishes to take the school. I'm new to the school this year, and the only person teaching Language and Literature - eep!

2. My most pressing question about this Language A course is around text selection. How do we craft a suite of fiction and non-fiction texts that will support students to engage fully with ideas while preparing them for success in all summative assessment tasks?

3. I'm enjoying this online space for professional learning and generating a sense of my work as an IB teacher within a truly global context. I look forward to observing the learning of my peers and making connections that can go beyond this workshop to offer ongoing mutual support.

4. A successful outcome for me after this workshop will look like:

- a settled sense of the scope of the subject that I have been asked to deliver
- a sense of confidence in planning and delivering the IB curriculum at my school this year and beyond

A criterion I used was considering the long-term needs of young people. Which approaches to teaching will offer skills for lifelong learning and personal growth?

I also ranked the approaches by considering intrinsic engagement. How might teaching build a student's sense of enjoyment of learning? One criterion I used for this ranking was around the specific nature of the learning environment in this course. Hopefully students are able to access knowledge from a range of sites and sources, thereby making the specific content knowledge of this course only one sources of information about, say, researching or self-managing. The type of thinking and communicating that we are using and studying seems somewhat more "native" to this area of inquiry, somehow.
