In artwork, he is shown as a young man, usually drawn with the herald's staff. The staff was given to him by Apollo, as a sign of forgiveness, after Hermes had apologized for stealing Apollo's cattle.

When Hermes was first born, he was a trickster. He left his crib to steal the cattle of Apollo. However, Zeus was not angry at him for stealing the cattle. When Odysseus and his men were facing Circe, he noticed that all his men became pigs. Hermes, who was sent by Athena, appeared to Odysseus and told him to eat a special herb to protect himself from Circe. 

Later on, Hermes came again to help Odysseus to leave the island. Calypso, the goddess of the island that Odysseus was residing on, had kept Odysseus trapped for 10 years.
