Union Commander Franz Sigel launched an expedition in Southern Missouri to disperse a group of confederate loyalists. the poorly armed group would counter attack the union group and would force them into the town square where a bloody battle occurred which the union being outnumbered heavily withdrew from. this is significant as this battle helped the confederates identify the states loyalties and paved way for their next battle.

Union commander Ulysses Grant launched an assault on Fort Donelson to be able to take control of nearby rivers. the victory over the Confederates gave Grant recognition and gave the union control of southern kentucky and the rails and rivers around the area. the significance of this battle is due to the control the union was able to get in a southern area allowing supplies to be easier to access.
