Broken Promises

Breaking a promise leads to a distrust between both parties in the long run. An example of broken promises in The Glass Castle is how Rex would constantly talk about how he's going to make a huge glass castle with rooms for everyone. "When Dad wasn’t telling us about all the amazing things he had already done, he was telling us about the wondrous things he was going to do. Like build the Glass Castle. All of Dad’s engineering skills and mathematical genius were coming together in one special project: a great big house he was going to build for us in the desert." I chose this picture because it depicts how her family have broken promises to Jeannette, Lori, Brian, and Maureen.

Acceptance

Acceptance can always come in good or bad ways, there's never an in-between. Jeannette's mom has accepted that they will probably live poor lifestyle and isn't bother by it and doesn't care about what people think about her. "Life's too short to care about what other people think. Besides, they should accept us for who we are." The reason why I chose this picture was because everyone makes peace with something. We accept it because we grew used to it whether it was good or not.

Chaos and Order

Being in a disorderly place for too long makes you yearn for some peace and quiet. Jeannette has always lived in a chaotic household. Moving from place to place and living in questionable conditions. Peace and quiet is something that is almost impossible to have for any of them. When Jeannette moved from Welch with Lori in NYC she was able to find some new control in her life. When she moved in she was able to eat food everyday. "We got 20 percent off on our meals, and for the first few weeks there, I had a cheeseburger and a chocolate milk shake every day for lunch." The reason why I chose this picture was to show in the left side how things were very disorganized in Jeannette's life, and in the right side her life after moving out of Welch.

Fantasy vs. Reality

Living in a fantasy to escape out of problems isn't going to help when you get reminded about how bad it actually is. The Walls family were always moving places, never sticking to one place alone because Rex would tell the family that he's being chased by the FBI and they need to stay ahead so he doesn't get caught when in reality it's just bill collectors looking for him. "Dad often has the family do the "skedaddle" and while he claims it is because FBI agents are after them, Mom says that it is actually to avoid bill collectors." I chose this image for the reason that Rex has always been in a fantasy that he's being chased by FBI and how he's such a dangerous person when in reality his life is more sad than what he thinks.

Disappointment

Expecting something and having it cancelled/not standing up for you brings disappointment and a big trust issue moving forwards. Jeannette was disappointed in her mom that she mentioned to her how she needs to be nice with Erna no since she's the reason they aren't homeless. "Mom was upset, though. "We may not agree with all of Erma's views," she said, "but we have to remember that as long as we're her guests, we have to be polite." The reason why I chose this image is because it shows an expectation you have or hope for, only to be brought down to a harsh reality bringing you disappointment and sometimes anger.

People aren't always going to take care of you, you need to learn how to take care of yourself.
Jeannette had to find ways to care for herself as her parents never really took care of them. Jeannette boiled hot dogs and got burns all over her body because of it.
"But at that moment, I was wearing the dress to cook hot dogs, watching them swell and bob in the boiling water as the latemorning sunlight filtered in through the trailer's small kitchenette window. I felt a blaze of heat on my right side. I turned to see where it was coming from and realized my dress was on fire." The reason why I chose this picture was to show how Jeannette had to decide either "depending" on her parents or to become independent.
