Appearance: On the surface it appears that Hamlet is okay for killing Polonius. The adverb "almost" implies that he still believes that whatever he has done is nothing in comparison to what Gertrude and Claudius has done.

Reality: In reality it can be argued that he knew that he has committed a crime/sin just was bad as what Claudius and Gertrude. Hamlet explicitly stated that he has committed a "bloody deed".

"Alas, how is't with you, And with th'incorporal air do hold discourse?" - Gertrude

Through the phrase "th'incorporal air" possibly suggests that Hamlet is mad. The adjective "th'incorporal" means empty, therefore the contemporary audience could infer that Hamlet was mad because he was the only one that could "see" the ghost of his father. Using context of the of Catholics and Protestants at the time we know that people are able to see ghosts as they are able to show themselves if they pleased.
However while he may seem mad, to a modern audience it can be interpenetrated as Hamlet being sane and acting mad because in our time period it believed that we aren't able to see ghosts, it only really ever happens on rare occurrences. It can also be considered that Hamlet is actually just acting because in the context of a revenge genre ghosts are supposed to be common place.

Appearance: On the surface - with connections to Act 3 Scene 2 - it appears that Hamlet is intentionally trying to hurt his mother (at least psychologically). On the surface it could seem to the audience that Hamlet is equally blaming Claudius and Gertrude for the murder of Old Hamlet.

Reality: In reality - internally - Hamlet could actually be tormented by the fact that Gertrude is married to Claudius and is having sex with him. Repetition of the semantic field of sex - such as the words bed or "compulsive ardour" - could imply that Hamlet is concerned about Gertrude's marriage with Claudius. Within this scene very little is actually mentioned about the death - or murder - of Old HA
