if i were a healthcare professional, i would give both the patient and his son the full facts of the treatment programme so that they are able to make informed decisions without any misinformation. i would try my best not to sugarcoat or give overly high hopes, yet still ensure that i remain optimistic so as to not worry the patients. i would also reassure the patient by saying something along the lines of “no matter what you decide, your doctors will support your decision and work to ensure that you always feel comfortable and are not in pain”

If I were a healthcare professional in this situation I would do my best to give the patient and the son the details of the situation and how the surgery might go, clear up any misconceptions, as well as tell them what I suggest is optimal for the patient, then respect the patient's decision ultimately and help the son emotionally cope with anything that happens.
