What Social Issue am I passionate about; Abortion

Something that I have been extremely passionate about as of late is abortion. This is obviously an extremely controversial topic that tends to warrant one of two reactions from people: uncomfortable looks and sweaty palms, or a pro or against rant. I happen to fall right at the pro-abortion side of the topic and there are many reasons as to why that is and specifically what brought on this extremely important passion of mine.

The spark that ignited this passion was brought on by a situation that had occurred in Ohio, to Brittany Watts, a 33-year-old woman who had been getting treatment at a hospital for her pregnancy, until she suffered a miscarriage and passed the nonviable fetus in her bathroom, which resulted in her facing criminal charges for "abuse of a corpse."

This was my spark because just before Brittany Watt's situation occurred, abortion was legalized in Ohio, and the law stated that abortion was legal until embryonic cardiac activity could be detected. Furthermore, Brittany was within the legal time period, before any embryonic cardiac activity, when the miscarriage occurred. So, she was investigated and incorrectly criminally charged for abuse of a corpse as the fetus was nonviable at that time.

This all occurred because a medical professional that had treated her while she was pregnant noticed at a returning visit that the fetus was gone and reported her to the police. Then, the people who arrested her, weren't aware of the abortion law and wrongly accused her.

This entire situation is so upsetting because this woman who had been trying to get pregnant, experienced a miscarriage, as well as all the excruciating pain of passing the fetus, then was investigated, and wrongly accused of abuse of a corpse, then was arrested until people who were actually educated (the jury of her case) had pointed out the wrongdoings of who arrested her.

It's so much injustice which wouldn't have occurred if it weren't for the prejudices of those who are either unwilling to educate themselves on abortion or are just against it. The bulk of which are those who have unsolicited opinions over how women's bodies aren't theirs to make decisions on.

Abortion is health care. Those who are forced to live as mothers who are unable to or don't want to are highly likely to find dangerous alternatives just because of other people's prejudices. So, I want to write about abortion to help women like Brittany who have suffered injustices or women who feel lost in all the hate and prejudice of society feel safe and confident in making their own choices over their bodies.

My goals and hopes in writing over my chosen issue; Abortion

There is a lot I hope to accomplish over addressing abortion rights in my writing. As most other women's rights activists who address abortion, the main goal is to draw attention to the subject and educate those who are uneducated. However, I also hope to change people's views on abortion and (although it is one of the most difficult things in the world) I hope to persuade people to care more about the women experiencing these things and try to understand why they would put themselves through such a procedure in the first place than to only focus on their prejudices or religious beliefs instead.

One of the biggest influences on people when it comes to their decision on whether they're pro-abortion or against abortion typically centers around their religious beliefs. I personally, do not practice or follow any religion, however, I respect those who do, and wanted to put myself in the mindset of someone who does in order to try and understand their reasoning behind their side.

So, while there are many different religions, one of the most practiced religions in America is Christianity. This religion has very particular views on what a sin is, and to many, abortion is considered a sin. However, according to the Bible (Christian's sacred text) in the situation of the life/health of a mother or a child, the mother is supposed to come first. That is a great work around for Christians who say their religion prohibits abortion which is why they are against it, and allows those who try not to stray from their sacred text to see that their are work arounds.

So, I'd say while I'd love to educate and change views for people against abortion on the matter, I'd also love to show people that there are always work arounds that don't require straying from their religious practices/beliefs.

What are my fears when it comes to writing about my chosen issue? (Abortion)

There is a lot that I fear when it comes to promoting social change. There is no world where standing up for something so controversial is going to go without any issues or arguments. With this social issue in particular, the arguments can be as serious as "murder." So, when writing about my issue, there is a lot I'm afraid to fight against, however, I know that I can for my argument to be plausible.

As previously mentioned, one of the biggest arguments for the "pro-life" side of abortion is that abortion "kills" or is "murder." To put it simply, it's not. Abortion is the expulsion of a nonviable fetus before it reaches the point where cardiac activity is detected. Specifically, abortion is not killing. So, when people claim that it is murder, they are either referring to when the procedure is done illegally or outside the legal timeframe, or they don't understand what abortion is.

Another incredibly scary thing to argue against when writing about this is those who talk about their regrets. Specifically, women who have had the procedure done and who have regrets of not allowing the fetus to grow into a child. This is a very tricky thing to argue against in a way that will help promote abortion, but it is not impossible. In fact, in this specific instance, when people bring up their regrets, it is important to remember that their regret stems from their choice. They made their choice to get an abortion, and unfortunately, what comes with one choice is always the regret over not choosing the other option. However, if these women were put in the position of not having a choice, they may have different opinions on fighting abortion as a whole. For instance, say a woman who had an abortion regrets their decision. An abortion does not mean that they can't have a child again, and if they're past the point of being able to get pregnant they could consider adoption. But, back into the regret. A woman who got an abortion got it for a reason, and the point to be made is that it was their choice. So, if they were in that position and didn't have the option, they wouldn't get to avoid all the things that made them make their decision in the first place. They would be forced to go through with a life changing experience no matter what. Forced.

So, while it is unfortunate to have regrets, having a choice and right to your body is more important than having regrets over something that isn't permanent (meaning that having a child again, whether reproductively or through adoption, is possible).

What obstacles do I face when it comes to writing in general? What about when it comes to writing about my topic specifically?

As a writer, there are always obstacles whenever it comes to writing something new. Common obstacles that I face when I write are the typical ones like disorganization of thoughts, or lack of specificities that will help make my piece more coherent. But the biggest (more general) obstacle is writer's block. However, made up, the term perfectly fits the little gap in my progress whenever I begin writing something, and as mentioned, writer's block is made up. It's not real. Writer's block is just the term to use when a writer hits a pause in their work, however, that pause always has a solution.

Writer's block typically occurs when I lose inspiration or motivation to continue writing a piece that I'm working on, and it typically has an easy fix. If I want to get back into what I'm writing and get more progress made, or just finish it all together, I will stand up and move around for a bit or get a drink or find any other miscellaneous tasks that will take a short time to get my blood flowing and get my energy back up then I'm typically fine to continue on from that point.

Now, when it comes to obstacles that I face when writing about my topic (Abortion) in particular, none of which are the more general ones that I mentioned before. I never lose inspiration or motivation when I write about Abortion. It is because I am so passionate about the topic, that finding the words and going into in depth descriptions and explanations always comes easy.

However, the types of obstacles that I face when writing about Abortion specifically, are things like fear of overstepping and fear of backlash. A lot of what gets in the way of writing about Abortion is the fear. Now, I know that in writing, overstepping boundaries is necessary to make your point. However, it doesn't make it any less nerving to write about something so controversial. As for backlash, that is bound to come from those whose opinions are as strong as mine just for the opposing argument, but like I said before, it's scary, and there is no greater obstacle than fear. However, I will continue to write about abortion in the hopes of making things better for those who deserve it.

Who am I writing for? Who is my target audience?

While I hope that my writing reaches everyone, regardless of their gender, race, sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, etc., my target audience for this specific topic is women. Abortion is one of those issues that surrounds the belief that it affects everyone and their lives, but it doesn't. Abortion effects the life of the person who wants to get it. The person who wants the choice to say no to a life they don't want without the unjustified judgement of their peers and society as a whole. Likewise, more often than not, that person is a woman.

My goal is to provide a sense of unity and safety for women who want to choose their path in life just like everyone else (men) gets to do. I want women to feel proud to have the choice to live their lives how they want to and not have to be forced to live a life that confines them to societal norms. Too many women are suffering because of societal pressures and socially constructed ideals that label them as evil for making a decision over their own body.

It is simply insane that so many people have to feel judged and scared and alone because society says that they don't deserve to choose. Or because society says that their choice makes them a murderer. Women deserve to make their own choices over their bodies and deserve to feel safe and understood for their choice because that's human. So, I hope my writing will reach these women and let them know that they aren't alone.

What are the possible implications - positive and negative - of writing about this issue?

There are obviously many possible positive and negative implications of writing about Abortion. These implications are determined on which side of the issue that people fall on (whether for or against Abortion). Obviously, people who are against Abortion won't likely partake in any action that will help educate and persuade people on the topic, however, people who are pro-abortion are more likely to help educate those who are unwilling to educate themselves or help persuade people who aren't quite sure where they stand or who would be open enough to consider switching their views.

On the positive end of the implications, the possibilities are those of what I hope to achieve while writing about Abortion. Things like educating those who are unknowledgeable on the subject or those who picked a side of the topic without actually knowing what it is, would be ideal. Likewise, I could provide a potential outlet for those like me who want to make pro-choice articles and writings to reach similar or different audiences like I do.

On the negative end of the implications, there are obviously the possibilities of people on the opposite side of the issue wanting to prove why their side is the right choice. Even though, the bulk of their decision means that the woman won't have a choice. Moreover, things like backlash from people against abortion might affect how many people choose to speak out on their pro-abortion views. However, those as passionate about writing about it as I am, will take the risk for the positives and do their best to ignore the negatives although, they'll always be there.

What are my motivations for writing? What are other influences that may affect my writing?

I have plenty of motivations for writing about Abortion. For starters, I want to stick up for women who want to be able to make their choice without societal backlash. I will never get over how sickening it is that there are people who forget that despite their opinions or side on the matter, women who want to be able to be in control of their bodies and make their own choices, are people. We're all people, and people who want to be treated like a person with the right to make a choice, are justified in doing so.

Another motivation I have is my family. Specifically, my grandmother, mother, older sister's stepmother, and a few of my aunts, have all in one way or another, have been presented with making a choice, and all of which, have said how glad they were to have had the choice, regardless of which choice they made. I want to fight for the right to choose because women deserve that right just as anyone else does. I am extremely fortunate to have women in my life who have helped me learn and realize that my choice is important, and it matters and that only I deserve the right to make decisions over my body.

As for other motivations, I don't think my ego or aesthetics have anything to do with my choice of topic. Now, as for my political purpose and historical impulse, my motivations take root more in those areas. Abortion is an extremely political issue and so politics are unavoidable, so it would be foolish to say that politics have no bearing on my choice to write about it. Likewise, for historical impulse, I have seen a lot of injustice obviously historically for women, and from women's suffrage all the way to Roe vs. Wade, there is too much to pick from historically to not have my motivations been influenced by history.
