1) what is marketed? They are marketing a volunteer teaching position in Ghana that offers many different durations of time spent there, ranging from 4 - 50 weeks. The teaching position is for primary, junior high and secondary school allowing the volunteers to absorb the culture with plenty of free time and many different activities for you to enjoy.

2) humanitarian gaze?
Has the saved/savior aspect- it says "make life long friends across the globe"

3) gendered generosity? Not directly stated however, perceived as though more feminine people are inclined to volunteer. Those that are good with labour and childcare which as we discussed is feminized allowing those to believe this volunteer work to be mainly for women.

1) What is marketed?
A 12-week volunteering trip, in Vietnam, Cambodia and Bali. You will volunteer in schools, teaching English, helping locals gain the tools to break out of poverty and to do something fulfilling during your gap year. Your expenses are covered by your 15% and 85% payments.

2) Humanitarian gaze?
You're giving up your most valuable possession, your time to help those in need. "Make a real difference to the lives of some of the most needy children in this beautiful developing country". Talks mainly about helping kids but the reviews mainly describe animal sanctuaries. The description of the countries specifically describes how poor the countries are as if that is the main focus of this trip.

3) gendered generosity?
It doesn't feel like it is directed toward a specific gender. The pictures include both men and women, specifying same sex bedrooms/bathrooms on the trip.

(Christian, Anjali, Megan, Breagha)

more_vertical

Cameron Chow, Omana Pisharoty, Peyton Harms, Ryley Thompson

1) what is marketed?

This website markets an opportunity for tourists to have the best of both worlds: be tourists and volunteer-saviours. A significant part of the website focuses on how tourists can use this volunteering opportunity to explore Delhi and its neighbouring states. A big portion of the itinerary talks about day trips, sightseeing, and food recommendations. Volunteers are encouraged to plan day trips to take the schoolchildren on, to further combine travel and volunteering. Volunteers are allowed to stay a minimum of 4 weeks and a maximum of 12 weeks – this cements their status as temporary guests (tourists). The ease at which tourists can switch to different volunteer programs, get refunds, and minimise the inconveniences of travel is stressed upon multiple times. This too indicates the nature of the trip as tourism-centric, where the tourists' needs are focused on. The advertisement moreover portrays the children mentioned as unloved, unkempt, impoverished and uncivilised. It asserts that tourists, in the short time they are volunteering, can civilise, educate, and love these children into a state of betterment.

2) humanitarian gaze?

The website uses sensory language to appeal to the tourists, giving them a sense of savior complex, they can provide the children with material objects but have the power to “save the children” with their hearts and ability to care for them. The website also described basic skills such as greetings and manners that tourists can teach the children when in reality these children have these skills, they are portrayed as being in need of civility.

3) gendered generosity?

The website caters towards the traditional gender norm of women taking care of and educating children, with phrasing such as "Volunteers can assist in providing love, care, basic literacy, recreation and most importantly spend time and shower affection on them." All the media types on the website are centered around women as well, demonstrating how these women are almost caretakers for these children. There is a slight appeal to men with the mention of recreational games and introduction to "New games" (which would be western recreational activities)

It seems like a vacation more than a mission trip. The participants are only working from 9AM to 1PM and the rest of the time they relax and eat. It seems like the volunteers are people looking for an experience for themselves rather than an experience for the children.

3) gendered generosity?
Mexican families are “known for hospitality.”

The photos from the website depict the women being a lot closer to the children physically (like putting their arms around them).

All the teachers seem to women.
