Athenians say that Athens and Poseidon clashed at that place, over who will be the protector of the city of Athens. The islands are low (up to 253 m), rising from the shallow submarine threshold that in the geological past connected the coast of North Africa with the Apennine Peninsula. They are built of Miocene coral limestone and Quaternary sandstone, marl and clay. The north and east coasts are lower, well indented with more deep bays, and the west is steep and mostly inaccessible. Karst has been developed, so there are no surface watercourses. Due to the limestone base and summer drought, a significant part of the island is deserted and without vegetation.
