Sydney also gives up very easily when he thinks he can't do something and often does the bare minimum to survive. </div>]]></description>

Sydney is seen as "the old seesaw Sydney. Up one minute and down the next, now in spirits and despondency" (Dickens 91). This is showing how Sydney is the jackal to Stryvers lion because of his need to only obtain what he needs for survival. </div>]]></description>

Sydney has not always made the best life decisions but he is trying to reconstruct himself to be better but everyone around him is constantly bashing him for the way he is. Carton is "incapable of his own help and own happiness" (Dickens 92). Sydney is holding himself back, he is very intelligent but he lacks confidence and is very tired of constantly being shut down by Stryver. This is why he remains in the shadows of Stryver and others. </div>]]></description>
