Goal #2: Complete one year as Restorative Justice Coach at Gaithersburg MS.

I was recently hired as a Restorative Justice coach at Gaithersburg MS, where I currently teach as a social studies teacher. I am beginning my role in the 2022-2023 academic school year.

Metrics I will used to evaluate if I am reaching this goal are:
Holding 10 restorative justice circles throughout the year
Receive 75 hours of Restorative Justice training through Montgomery County Public School Restorative Justice Unit in the Summer of 2022 and 2022-2023 academic school year.
Present 3 Restorative Justice Presentations to leadership meetings at Gaithersburg MS during the 2022-2023 school year.
Reduce suspensions and detentions in my Grade 6 cohort by 5% compared to 2021-2022 academic school year

How will this help me better assess student knowledge and success in the classroom?

Completing this role as Restorative Justice coach will allow me to assist students in their social-emotional needs as well in building a good school climate for all.
As a restorative justice coach, I will better get to know my student population which will help me better know my population of students.

Working as a restorative justice coach will also allow me to better my community of teachers at my school as I will run community circles, mediation circles and more.
This role also allows me to focus on equity which is a huge problem in assessments today. Many students do not get the accommodations they are given and test scores frequently show the achievement gap.
This will allow me to get practice with objective setting and criterion based assessments as working in this role will allow me to track school data with discipline, identify ways to assess if community circles and restorative justice practices are working at my school.

How will this help me better assess student knowledge and success in the classroom?

Metrics used to evaluate progress towards this goal on June 30, 2023.

This year is my first year coaching any sports and it has been a blessing. Coaching sports has allowed me to connect with students in a way that helped me implement social-emotional skills and with having my passions to look forward to at the end of school days.

I have already completed one season of Cross Country and I was able to coach a team of 16 runners who competed across Montgomery County.

My goals for the team are helping all runners improve their confidence in themselves by an average of 15
%. I will evaluate this by taking a confidence survey in the first week of practice in September 2022 and then another in the final week of practice in November 2023.

I want to help all runners improve their times on the Gaithersburg MS by 10% by the end of the season. This would be determined by comparing times run in the first week of Practice in September 2022 and comparing times run the final week of Practice in November 2023.

How will this help me better assess student knowledge and success in the classroom?

Coaching sports will help me in mastering the fact that I must always adapt when teaching and working with youth. Like teaching, in coaching you must always be ready to make changes and promote equity with students. I have noticed even with athletics at my school, there is a gap as more well-off students tend to participate in sports while students coming from lower-income backgrounds are less likely to participate. In order to reach this goal of equity, the education system like assessments, athletics should be accessible to all students. In order for an assessment to be accessible, it must take a wide range of factors into account, many of which are socioeconomic. I hope to connect my coaching and teaching as both make a central part of who I am. (Brookhart, S. M., & McMillan, J. H. Eds.2019 pg. 247)

Metrics used to evaluate progress towards this goal on June 30, 2023.
In order to complete this goal, I must fulfill all of my Standard Professional Certificate requirements. I must stay committed to my academics at Montgomery College and also pass my PRAXIS exams.

I must commit and show commitment to the five core propositions of the NCBT: Proposition 1

Teachers are committed to students and their learning

Proposition 2

Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students

Proposition 3

Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring students learning

Proposition 4

Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience

Proposition 5

Teachers are members of learning communities

I must also meet the standard on Formal evaluations at Gaithersburg MS. In order to do this, I must know my content knowledge, find multiple ways to assess student learning and build relationships with my students on a consistent basis in my lessons during the 2022-2023 school year.

How will this help me better assess student knowledge and success in the classroom?

National Board Certification is a long-term goal I have. My goal is to achieve this goal by the year 2032. In the next year, to achieve this goal I will stay committed to fulfilling my certification requirements. I will also continue to take courses with the goal of earning a B or higher to sharper my craft as a teacher. Working towards this goal will allow me to continue to look at assessments, especially with making sure these assessments help me measure objectives. I want to take The Skillful Teacher course in Spring 2024 and I am currently reading the book. I also believe the competitiveness of earning NCBT certification will be healthy for me as it will allow me to continue to push myself.

Metrics used to evaluate progress towards this goal on June 30, 2023.

I am planning on taking a course in Montgomery County Public Schools PDO called in Winter 2022 #90607 Accessible Tools: EquatIO (2021-2022) (HIAT)

In this class, Participants will learn/understand how the tool, EquatIO, supports many students with a variety of learning needs: This tool is Assistive Technology for students who require text-to-speech, speech-to-text, online calculator, drawing tools, and math accommodations.

I am also planning on taking

A course in MCPS #90953 Ways to Write: Digital Strategies to Support Written Output (HIAT PD)

This session will review writing strategies primarily secondary students working in the general education curriculum.

We will focus on digital strategies to support students struggling with written output.

In this session, we will consider how to determine what writing tools and strategies would best support students based on the classroom environment (e.g. whole group/small group; technology available, noise level, etc.) and educational outcome.

How will this help me better assess student knowledge and success in the classroom?

These courses will allow me to bring in more technology based assessments. This is good because although students do assessments often on computer, they are tested on paper in the classroom. I hope to make this more consistent as coaches often say players should “practice how you play”, I will apply this to assessments.

I hope to become better at assessing my students with special needs as I hope to stay committed to equity in assessments. It is difficult for teachers to implement the Fairness as Reducing Measurement Bias the right way. There are many student characteristics (culture, language, knowledge, disability) that cannot be measured. The U.S. is a melting pot:, 20% students living in poverty, 50% ethnic minorities, 9.4% ELL's and 13% students with disabilities: it is a challenge to create assessments that will accurately show one’s skills as a student and knowledge when there are so many factors that may easily be measured the wrong way, adding to lack of trust in assessment scores by ,many parties.
As a man of color, my goal is to reduce bias and promote fairness and equity, especially with test results
