My source was the national institute on health, specifically amongst the goals provided, I chose goal C. Developing effective ways for eldery people to maintain their health, their function and their well being in order to prevent, or reduce age related ailments such as diseases, disorders and disabilities (NIH, Goal C, 2019). I find this to be the most important aspect of aging, taking care of oneself and reducing the risk of preventable diseases, conditions, pain, brain deterioration by simply exercising, eating healthy and staying socially and mentally active. This is the main approach of the sub goal of Goal C, C1. The main approach is finding a cost effective way to teach elderly folks on the healthy ways of living, by building on the knowledge of the roles of nutrition, sleep, obesity and metabolic status (NIH, Goal C, 2019). This is important because this knowledge will help develop a healthier lifestyle by creating different strategies to keep up with our health as we age. If more and more elderly start to understand the importance of a healthy lifestyle, it will only benefit society and people will see their effort and if the elderly are doing it, so can the average person.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

When looking at the website of the national institute of aging many good points were made about how aging can lead to many things. But one big point that I think everyone should be aware of is in goal A. Basically what goal A talks about is how old people changing due to normal biology leads to a lot of eventual disease and disabilities. The article goes through all the different changes it leads to in older people such as all physical and as well as psychological changes it can lead to. I believe that not many people know how much change one gets when they reach that level of old, so this article is showing those who don’t know what occurs to help them find out how much one changes.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

There are many health disparities that come with age, differences in "Race, Ethnicity, Socioeconomic Status, Disability Status, Identity, and expression* (e.g., gender, racial, ethnic), Geographic location (e.g., rural or urban environment), Education, Health care (e.g., access, quality), Culture (e.g., norms, traditions, collective responses), and Health behaviors (e.g., smoking, violence, substance abuse)" (NIA). All of these things play a role in how someone will age and the National Institute on Aging is doing research to find out exactly what plays a role in the health of aging adults. To do this they must look into all factors like "environmental, social-cultural, behavioral, and biological factors"(NIA). They have already found many coreltations like women living longer than men and saw more cases of Alzheimer's in African Americans and Hispanics. They want to use this information to help better health care for the future and improve access in lower-income areas.

NIA.

My source came from equity in aging and discussed the factors that lead to inequalities in healthy aging and what can be done to improve health equity. Health and social care systems are big determinants of healthy aging and those who are wealthy usually have a good system while the poor families, at times, have to take care of their elders, (Sadana et al, 2016). Healthcare can be extremely expensive and can be looked at as a luxury in our country when in reality, it is a basic need that should be free. The article discusses some health systems that can be put into place to mitigate the inequalities such as making policies that increase universal health care inclusive of older adults, (Sadana et al, 2016). There should be no such thing as inequality when it comes to age and we must implement new policies that protect all elders.
Sadana, R., Blas, E., Budhwani, S., Koller, T., & Paraje, G.

Having a healthy lifestyle can help with the change that comes with aging prevent some health problems help you to make the most of your life. a healthy lifestyle for older adults includes healthy eating, regular physical activity, staying at a healthy weight, keeping the mind active, mental priorities, doing activities you enjoy, and preventing falls. According to the NIH, Goal C (2022), research in this area will promote the most fundamental aspect of health and well-being: nutritious diet, adequate exercise, and healthy behaviors that will result in effective ways to maintain health and independence. A healthy eating plan includes eating foods that give you lots of nutrients without the extra calories. Such as foods like chips candy, high processed baked goods, etc. being physically active helps you maintain a healthy weight and avoid chronic health problems. the amount of exercise needed depends on the age and health of the individual. being either overweight or underweight can lead to health problems. work on improving your mental health, for example by practicing meditation, relaxation techniques, our gratitude can help reduce stress (U.S. National Library of medicine, 2021). Knowing the warning signs of problems and asking for help if you are struggling can save you from an injury. people who are involved in hobbies, social and leisure activities may be lower at risk for some health problems. getting regular checkups and health screenings that you need can help prevent illnesses or disease from worsening.
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

When I first hoped on this website I thought to myself how great it is that I live in a country where they take older people into consideration. I believe a lot of people treat older people with no respect and no compassion. This website offers so many great things for them and I believe that goal A is great because it helps give us a better understanding of the biological changes that occur in the human body when they are older. They explain that when we grow older we are more prone to getting chronic diseases and this can actually reduce our quality of life. They explain that inflammation is our body's way of heals and how this changes with age. They also list a total of eight objectives for goal a and how exactly we can approach them each of them. They also begin to explain to us that the reduction in the amount of calories that are taken in make normal cell mount in stress. I find it great that they are doing so much research in the aging process and continue to help support the health of elderly people

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Having affordable health care is important for everyone but yet for some it may not be so easy just because of their background or their current medical history.
Access to affordable, quality healthcare, including addiction and mental health care, is critical to preventing interaction with law enforcement and the criminal legal system and helping people who are reentering society from incarceration, struggling with – or in recovery from – a substance use disorder or mental illness, or diagnosed with or at risk HIV or AIDS. Unfortunately, these individuals often face the highest barriers to receiving the care they need to become and remain well as a result of poor coverage, insurance discrimination. Equality as stated in the article defined as giving everyone the same access to services and resources and treating everyone similarly. these individuals may have had different circumstances in life but they are still entitled to equal healthcare access and care.

The article centers around 72-year old woman from Washington Seattle's china town named Dorthy. For most of her life living in her town consisted of many social events, gatherings with friends, and a strong sense of community. During the pandemic Dorthy noticed a change that has her feeling heart broken. The local shops and stores that are usually busy for Saturday are now less than half full. Her friend that drives the bus everyday was recently beaten and harassed and told to go back to his country. The core of this problem occurring after Former President Donald Trump branded COVID-19 as the "Chinese Virus". Only relying on her local newspaper that has limited information on the virus because its in her native language, Dorthy feels a sense of loneliness and isolated. No longer can she go to the bakery in the morning because it has gone out of business, but also her daily workout with her instructor has temporarily been suspended. The affects on the Chinese community have felt the pandemic in the worst way and elderly folk have been left to go without their daily routines.

https://justiceinaging.org/life-at-the-intersection-older-adults-need-a-response-to-covid-19-grounded-in-equity/

It was interesting to find out how many health disparities are in different cultures, genders, races, disability statuses etc. When it comes to factors that can affect any health disparities, there are many including social, environmental and behavioral factors to name a few. The National Institute supports research into diverse research groups to get a better understanding at how health disparities occur and I believe that it's extremely important that they do. It was known to me that there were specific races that had more health problems than others due to environmental factors and social prejudices but if more research was made and more people were educated on it, hopefully they become more aware and can take more opportunities to take extra care of their own health.
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Along with aging may come a variety of issues for an elderly individual depending on how they tend to themselves, ranging from risks such as physical conditions and mental impairments. Over years of observation and study, it has been determined that there is much to be done to prevent the physical and mental barriers encountered as individuals age. Creating healthy routines and prioritizing basic factors directly correlated to your wellbeing, such as diet and exercise, is well known. With this knowledge, research is now transitioning to a focus on technological advancements that can better assist those in effectively managing their health as they age. This will encompass the encouragement of devices such as heart monitors, while also entailing an inclined focus on tools that better detect diseases and conditions sooner rather than later.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

F-1 talks about how factors that come from social, cultural, environment, and biological aspects of one’s life can contribute to the overall quality of one’s life throughout aging. This study is important because it can help us understand how intersectionality effects health and aging both negatively and positively. For example if you take a person who is part of a minority and comes from a working class background and compare their health and their resources that they can obtain when in an older age, such as assisted living or products like a walk in tub, a bed that raises itself, stuff that helps when one is older and can not move properly, they may not be able to get these things, compared to let’s say a white person from a wealthy class background. The idea is that different backgrounds bring people into different situations because the systems are made this way and by knowing this we as a society or even for ourselves as we age can prepare and work to get the resources one needs when aging.

Another aspect that this topic looks into is how behavioral and cultural factors can contribute to how one reacts to and handles hardships that may come with aging. For example if someone is used to eating a certain diet due to their culture then they may be more likely to get diabetes if they do not have an active lifestyle. Behavioral factors can effect someone in the way one takes on the challenges that often come with aging. If someone is negative and doubtful in their abilities to do things on their own then they may not be able to find the motivation to overcome these obstacles. Whereas if someone is hopeful and believes that they are capable and feel young then they may show this in their physical appearance and strength.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. I can only imagine that getting older has its own stresses, it is so disheartening that African Americans have more stress just because of their skin color. In this article it talks about how African American elders have a hard time getting basics necessities like healthcare or the grocery store. It is so important that all of our elders are taken care of. Whatever it takes we have to do a better job in making sure these people are taken care of. Limited access to community recourses contributes to race related stress and creates major barriers for these individuals.

African American Older Adults and Race-Related Stress.

Personal, interpersonal, and social roles are critical in health across the lifespan. According to the National Institute on aging (NIH), 50% of preventable deaths in the U.S are due to health behaviors (NIH, Goal B, 2022). Examples include excessive smoking and unhealthy diets. As for social factors, they play a similar role in health. Examples of social effects involve social isolation and feeling lonely. As stated in cross-national epidemiological studies, isolation is a risk factor for morbidity and mortality (NIH, Goal B, 2022). Among older adults, subjective feelings of loneliness present high risks in deaths. Education and income also fall within social factors and are important because they play a significant role in how well a person ages.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. (Oxford Dictionary)” This is such an important term to use when identifying the unfair disadvantages that certain marginalized groups face, often times these factors are compounded. It’s a crucial term to understand and use as society advances toward an equal future. I liken this term and these factors to ACE’s or Adverse Childhood Experiences which we now understand to play a monumental role in the health of adults.

https://www.ywboston.org/2017/03/what-is-intersectionality-and-what-does-it-have-to-do-with-me/

The article "An Intersectional Approach to Services and Care for LGBT Older Adults" by Michael Adams talks about the relationship between the LGBT and the elderly. The elderly's life was not only shaped by the LGBT, but also by race, gender, and other social conditions (Adams). Adam also mentions that lesbian couples are more like to end up in poverty than gay male couples. Not only does he talk about poverty, but he also mentions that black older adults are twice as likely to get Alzheimer's and dementia than white older adults.

https://issuu.com/lgbtagingcenter/docs/s21_gene_40_2_adams_94-100

There are many health disparities that are related to aging and are associated with some population groups. In the article, it states that health disparities are influenced by “environmental, sociocultural, behavioral and biological factors” (NIA). For example, NIA included studies that demonstrated that “lower socioeconomic status is associated with poor health and reduced lifespan” (NIA). This is related to the social environmental factor, which includes residential segregation, discrimination, education and more, that can have a serious impact on their health and well-being. In other words, it depends on your economic circumstances that determines whether you can "afford quality health care and proper nutrition from early life into old age” (NIA).This can cause adults later on in their life not able to afford treatment that they need. People in the lower economic status often can not afford doctor visits that they need to live a healthy life. The lower- economic areas have difficulties with having a retirement plan to cover the cost for doctor visits in the future. A way to promote a healthy life in older adults would be staying active in diverse populations.

https://www.nia.nih.gov/about/aging-strategic-directions-research/goal-health-disparities-adults

Healthy Aging

Healthy aging is a significant aspect that ensures people maintain and improve their physical and mental health to achieve a quality life. During the aging process, people are affected by a wide range of diseases that could create physical injuries or mental complications such as stress or depression. However, healthy aging is possible if people practice appropriate practices such as exercising regularly, eating nutritious food, and observing their mental health. According to the National Institute on Aging, society must prioritize the aging population to improve their wellbeing and participation in socio-economic activities (National Institute on Aging, 2022). The increased medical conditions such as chronic diseases in contemporary society have created a challenge in safeguarding the future of older adults. This is coupled with the challenges of reduced sex drive, weight gain, and unhealthy lifestyles that must be addressed for better healthy lives.

Researchers have pointed at the need for nutritional and physical therapy to boost the physical, social, and psychological well-being of the aging population. Non-communicable diseases are becoming a growing burden which indicates the possibility of shrinking adults’ populations in the next few decades (National Institute on Aging, 2022). This means that emphasis must be laid out on effective practices that will enhance life expectancy and minimize deteriorating health among aging people. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, people should engage in aerobic exercises to strengthen their muscles and bones. Consuming healthy diets such as lean proteins, fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, and whole-grain cereals is instrumental for healthy aging. Besides, mental health matters are vital in the aging process and people must engage in social activities or spend time with loved ones to boost their moods, lower stress, and increase longevity. Therefore, health aging matters based on its role in achieving a sustainable and effective society for future generations.

Reference

National Institute on Aging.

When it comes to aging and being healthy, place matters where we were born, how we were raised, income, and other important factors will affect how people age and quality of life. There is a noticeable difference when we see an older person with various health problems. Some of the conditions may be generic, but others could result from addiction, polluted air, or not having access to clean water, as a difference with someone older who has good health (Centers for Health Progress, 2013). We will often see that higher-income populations have an increased life expectancy because they have had the resources to take care of their health. Also, another example could be that someone who grew up around violence is more likely to feel anxious and stressed.

Social Determinants of health - youtube. (n.d.).

The source of my choice would be the National Institution on Aging. The article gives advice such as maintaining a healthy diet and exercising, before you become an elder, Which we as people constantly hear, but do we really believe it as a society. No, If we knew the seriousness in prevention then more people would be motivated to change to a healthier lifestyle. Although changing one's habits is tough, committing to a healthy lifestyle can minimize the risk of disease and lengthen one's life. Understanding how and why good behavior change happens is essential for developing plans for efficient and productive behavior treatments that can consistently enhance health outcomes (NIH, Goal C, 2019). The article later explains that when being an early adult taking care of your body can prevent things such as cancer and other illnesses. Taking the time to make small changes in ones life can have huge outcomes.
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The source I selected was the National Institute on Health, Goal F. Disparate treatment of health issues based on different races, genders, and cultures is a serious social problem. This leads to the same physical abnormality, which may have different probability of occurrence and recovery due to different identities. The reason for this gap is not because of biological differences between individuals, but because of their social identities. Many times, everyone says that only death is equal, because no matter who will die, but is it really true? We need to pay attention to this issue for better social justice.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. (n.d.).

Equity in aging brings awareness to the inequities older adults face on a systemic and organizational level. According to the Equity in Aging Resource center the goal is to advance inclusivity and to ensure that all Californians of old age have equal opportunity to services and participation to choose where and how they age whatever they deem fit. Another aging initiative of the CDA or California Department of Aging is to combat potential racisms and or ageism that the elderly community can experience in aging and disability systems of care. To combat these types of discriminations we look at older adults during the covid-19 pandemic. Over the course of the pandemic older adults of Asian backgrounds have been receiving huge amounts of backlash and racism due to the origins of the virus and it being called the "Chinese Virus".

https://justiceinaging.org/life-at-the-intersection-older-adults-need-a-response-to-covid-19-grounded-in-equity/

We’re learned that there are many health disparities among populations. One topic of high importance, explored in “Goal F: Understand health disparities related to aging and develop strategies to improve the health status of older adults in diverse populations”, is that socioeconomic status strongly affects the health and wellness of older adults. Environment culture, social factors, and biological factors strongly determine health disparities among the older population (“Goal F: Understand health disparities”, n.d.). It’s important to understand that there are many diverse factors that affect aging. Further examination of the factors mentioned will provide a better understanding of the prevalence of health inequality, and hopefully give us insight on how to improve health status.

Goal F: Understand health disparities related to aging and develop strategies to improve the health status of older adults in diverse populations. The goal of these partnerships is to help generate trust and commitment between these groups and allow them to reduce any disparities in health services in vulnerable communities. In terms of the elderly, this would be beneficial as for improving quality of care in certain low-income senior care facilities or public health clinics.
