"presenting someone else's work, in whole or in part, as your own. Work means any intellectual output, and typically includes text, data, images, sound or performance. (University of Leeds, 2017)"

The reason we make sure not to plagiarise is so we earn our degree fairly, so that we can be proud of our independent work and so that Leeds students can contribute to the academic debates in their chosen subject.

At the university of Leeds we are part of a community which shares ideas and creates new ones. This means we don't take credit for other people's work. We can present others' work to help develop or back up our own ideas, however this must be credited to the true author. This is known as academic integrity.

According to University of Oxford, plagiarism can be intentional, reckless or unintentional. If avoiding plagiarism hasn't been practiced before it can be done accidentally. This is why students of the university of Leeds must take the academic integrity test to familiarise themselves with what it is to plagiarise.

When making notes from lectures and readings, try and write information in your own words to avoid plagiarising the information.

Correctly referencing and citing sources you used helps prevent plagiarism detection. Using websites such as scribbr.co.uk or citethisforme.com can help you understand how to format your references in the correct APA format.

Sending your work to an online 'plagiarism checker' is not recommended as sometimes your work may be sold to other students which may make you liable for plagiarism.
