Although certain acts could be thought of as heroic, like saving someone from a burning building or pushing someone out of the way of an incoming car, being a hero in a situation could mean more psychological acts of heroism such as saving someone from mental insanity or from a horrific home life like Ivy. In order to attain self-actualization, a person must first possess the needs of every category on the pyramid. An additional parallel you can draw is that Ivy and Jean both have a better relationship with their fathers, Beverly and Bill.
