Negi is portrayed as a young girl with a rather lively and cheerful personality. While she is not described physically, she can be described as a very curious person. She is shown as someone who observes the world around her with great interest.

Negi's behavior could be described as someone who is intelligent and quite perceptive. When she recalls her past in Puerto Rico, her attitude reflects a mix of affection for her homeland, Puerto Rico, and awareness about the challenges her family faced, especially her parents' strained relationship and economic hardships. Negi's attitude can be seen as a mix of innocence and maturity.

Negi has a close and admiring bond with her mother, who is the emotional pillar of the family. Her father is distant and emotionally detached, which creates a sense of disappointment in her. She shares a strong and supportive connection with her sisters, and together they overcome the hardships of their life in poverty. While there are challenges within the family, especially due to the absence of her father, the love of her mother in particular remains central to her.

The move symbolizes a change from the rural life he knows in Puerto Rico to the unfamiliar urban life that awaits him in New York. This transition will present him with challenges related to identity, belonging, and adaptation.

Jibaro/jibara- why is this word important/significant in Puerto Rican culture.

The term refers to the rural people of Puerto Rico, particularly those from the mountainous regions. It is significant in Puerto Rican culture as it symbolizes the island's pride, adaptability, and agricultural roots. Jíbaros were hard-working farmers who contributed to Puerto Rican culture, economy, and traditions. In the book, the term highlights the rural and working-class background of Negi's family and connects them to Puerto Rican identity.

I find Esmeralda’s description of her life as a child very immersive, it makes you feel and imagine what that situation or interaction between those people could be like, and it also puts a lot of emphasis on how cultural identity is very important, as well as the challenge of emigrating to a completely unknown country and how that can change you. The tension between Negi’s love for his homeland and the challenges of transitioning to a new life in the United States seems very familiar to me, since I come from a different country, I like the universal message it conveys, the fact of feeling overwhelmed by something unknown, something totally foreign to you, having to leave behind everything that was once meaningful to you.
