It has become very important as a teacher to challenge our students to be deeper thinkers. The customary way to teach is to lecture and then have the students regurgitate the information. As teachers, we have to make sure we are challenging our students to be higher level thinkers. To do so, we as teachers must be willing to think outside the traditional box as well. There are four levels of DOK (Depth of knowledge) that we must try and get the students to. Each level requires a deeper level of thinking and forces the students to challenge themselves.

I wasn't sure what to expect during the orientation, as this was my first one. The thing that stood out to me was the effort on the part of the leaders in the district to boost moral. I gained a sense of support and was motivated to be the best teacher that I can be. I felt like I would have a strong support system when I left. I didn't really have any questions. I guess it may be because I am married to an educator haha.

Our first meeting was on October 2nd
(I didn't have a mentor assigned to me until then). His name is Anthony Alston, he is a 6th grade ELA teacher at Furman. He is a former military man and we have a lot in common. We meet one time a week. He has also observed me and gave me some really good feedback. I have learned some helpful strategies by working with Mr. Alston. Our meetings are informative and very helpful as a new teacher.

This is out commandments or by-laws that keep our integrity and moral compass. These codes are very important in keeping our job and maintaining integrity as we move through this ever changing occupation. This code is there for our protection, and not there to hinder us in any way.

As far as grading, it is important that we know the district grading scale. It is also important that we manage our time so that papers are graded in an efficient manner and also that we are in constant communication with parents.

Papers to grade, parents to call, planning, more planning, meeting, paperwork........You get the idea right? This is a huge challenge for teachers of all ages and experience levels. Notably for first and second year teachers. I have found that setting times and scheduling things really help. Making a detailed schedule and also allowing for family time and small vacations help with this as well. It is also very important to have a support system within the school and district.
