After the shooting ceased the troops immediately left the place leaving behind the bloodbath they caused. The Amritsar Massacre was the turning point for Gandhi and he started comparing the British government to satanism. Winston Churchill also signed the Atlantic Charter which states that all people should have the right to political self-determination, but it didn't apply to India according to him. The British did not have enough resources to surprise a rising nationalist movement.
