Ava and Cassie Chapel, twin sisters, move into a dilapidated mansion called Blackthorn House. They are excited about the new home and their potential renovation project, but soon uncover a unsettling hidden drawing and a disturbing hidden tape. This discovery leads to a change in Cassie's behavior, raising Ava's concerns about the house's rumored haunted reputation.

Dr. Montague's wife, a parapsychologist, arrives at Hill House with a friend to investigate the ghostly activity. She claims to have a more methodical approach than her husband and uses a planchette to communicate with spirits. The spirit "Nell" reveals a desire to go home, which the group finds unsettling, particularly Eleanor. Mrs. Montague then chooses to spend the night in the haunted nursery, believing most spirits are just lonely. 

Chapter 8:

Ava and Cassie discover creepy, child-like drawings beneath their bedroom wallpaper, which depicts a screaming girl.
