Daniel Burnham introduced a structure to the architectural industry, the flatiron in New York city. After designing the Monadnock building he realized that the stone that was used skinked into the ground because of how heavy it was. When designing the flatiron he decided to create a skeleton structure made from steel metal, as then it was the lightest and strongest. The stone was like a curtain that went over the infrastructure. The Flatiron Building epitomizes the Chicago school conception: like a classical Greek column, its facade – limestone at the bottom changing to glazed terra-cotta from the Atlantic. Burnham is well known for his innovation and making a statement in the industry, making a ‘landmark’ which makes him stand out amongst all the other architects.

Daniel Libeskind- "Architecture is a field of repression," according to Polish-American architect Daniel Libenskind, who says that architects need to be more confrontational with their buildings."
"But he said that architects are often forced to conform their designs to fit expectations of what a building should offer." This architects inspires me because he has no limits in what he executes and is a risk taker. His recent project- "Libeskind's masterplan of Ground Zero in New York" he inspires me to not only design a building but a space within a asocial , residential or any client brief.

Both the staff and the universities that i've visited at the ucas fair have provided me with important information such as, life at the uni, accommodation, student night life and most importantly the structure of the course. The most important information that I gained from the fair was that the course has to be RIBA and ARB approved. I now understand every Architect needs to register with ARB and some also register with RIBA.

"We are the body set up by Parliament as the independent UK regulator of architects. Anyone who is involved in designing and constructing buildings, and describes themselves as an architect, must be registered with us. We can take action if someone wrongly calls themselves an architect.
We have a Board of 15 members. Seven members are architects who are elected to the Board by their fellow professionals. The other eight members, who are not architects, represent the public interest and are appointed to the Board by the Privy Council.
The Board is supported by a small staff team and by the Registrar (who also acts as Chief Executive).
What we do

Our duties and responsibilities for regulating architects are set out in the 1997 Architects Act. We must:

keep an up-to-date register of architects;

decide what qualifications are needed to become an architect;

set standards for education and professional practice;

investigate complaints about an architect’s conduct or competence; and

make sure that only people on our register use the name ‘architect’.

ARB and RIBA

We are often asked what the difference is between us, the Architects Registration Board, and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Both organisations are connected with architects, but we have different roles.
Among other things, the RIBA promotes architecture through prize schemes and campaigning, and maintains a leading library of architecture books and papers. It is one of several professional organisations for architects. Architects may choose to become members of RIBA or any of the other professional organisations for architects. Not all architects choose to become members.
We are the regulator of architects in the UK. We keep the UK Register of Architects, and anyone who wants to offer their services as an architect must register with us.

RIBA here.
Mission statement

To advance architecture by demonstrating benefit to society and promoting excellence in the profession.

Vision

Champion for architecture and for a better environment.

Strategy

Demonstrate the benefits of good architecture.

Promote and enhance the benefits.

Facilitate the delivery of good architecture.

Provide high-quality support services.

Develop the capability to deliver the strategy"
