Time flies! You've come a long way since you started CHIN1010 back in January. It's time to pause and reflect on this journey of learning Chinese here at UVA／弗大。你觉得学中文有意思吗？What has been particularly enjoyable and challenging for you? Have you found out your strengths and weaknesses and what are your plans to address those weak links? Have you found the study method/strategy that works the best for you? Would you mind sharing with 大家 what has been especially helpful for you? Is there anything you would like to let 老师 know so that we can help you better?

These questions are there to give you some idea what you can reflect on. Feel free to go beyond these questions and reflect on whatever stands out for you. Meaningful reflection helps you be more aware of your learning process and helps you discover more of yourselves in general. I hope you find this process both meaningful for yourself and helpful for all of us as a learning community.

Unless you are the first one to post your reflection, I would like you to read over 你的同学的 reflections and relate to something they have mentioned.

Please complete this assignment by due 2月28日，星期三，晚上10点。

I always thought I would enjoy learning another language because I adore Spanish so much, and I am glad to see that I was right. Though Chinese definitely has the biggest workload of all my classes, I honestly enjoy practicing writing out the dictations and matching up radicals to figure out how to remember new characters. Just as Shannon said, it's hard to pull myself away from Chinese to do my other homework because I just know how much there is still to learn and how fantastic it will be to have a real conversation in Chinese where it doesn't take me thirty seconds to introduce myself!
At the beginning of every new lesson, I make a flashcard for each new vocabulary word, with the character on the front and the pinyin and English meaning on the back. I then go through the flashcards along with the textbook reading of them and practice repeating the words back until I can guess the words before the dialogue says them. I then practice reading the lesson textbook dialogue along with the dialogue recording to further practice recognition. I think I am going to start using 朴美爱的 technique of also writing out the dialogue to practice forming sentences of good structure because I still struggle with that quite a bit. Because of this, I have memorized both of my presentations so far ahead of time, but that's pretty difficult, and I need to figure out a way to practice communicating my thoughts on the spot.

I also am still struggling with pronouncing tones, but I think that is mostly due to how slowly I speak. When I speak more quickly, my tones come out a lot more fluidly, so I think I just need to practice speaking on my own more. Lastly, to help with tones, I just downloaded the textbook CDs onto my phone, just as 欧揎灵 has suggested in class a few times, and I plan to listen to them on my way to class/while I do my homework just to familiarize myself with the correct pronunciation of Chinese speech. My goal for this week is to understand sentence structure enough to improvise parts of my presentation.

Chinese is a hard language to break down into parts, with pinyin and radicals and tones and characters, but the fact that we can all give a short presentation after only a couple of weeks really speaks to 老师's teaching method and our hard work. I can't wait to learn more! 大家加油jia1you！

Chinese 1010 has been challenging for me yet thoroughly rewarding. I think I am coming into the class with an interesting perspective: not only am I half Chinese, but I have heard Chinese been spoken around me for my entire life and I've taken a few years of it in high school. Given my background, I definitely have a slight leg-up in the class. This leg-up, however, by no means means that I am coasting by the class; in fact, I find myself improving, struggling, and learning constantly.

I think tones have always been something that I've struggled with (my grandparents laugh at me sometimes when I mix the tones up and end up saying something I really did not intend to), namely mixing up tones for certain words. With 老师's help, though, I'm having a much better time grasping and remembering the tones. For me, what helps me the most is repetition. I make sure I understand the characters in the dialogue and then I drill myself with each character's pinyin, deliberately exaggerating each tone so that it sticks in my head. I still get mixed up with the tones sometimes when I try to speak at a faster pace, and I know that when I do that, it means that I need to spend extra time reviewing those tones so that it becomes ingrained into my speaking.

Finally, learning Chinese is perhaps one of the most rewarding aspects of my academic life here at UVa. As mentioned previously, I am half Chinese, and my Chinese grandparents live with me and have done so for my entire life. Their English, however, is not highly conversational and nor is my Chinese, making our communication sometimes very limited. For me, learning Chinese is not just a helpful skill to have entering the work force; rather, it is a portal into my culture, an entrance into a part of me that I am proud of but have left largely untapped.

I agree with Julia when she says that Chinese 1010 has been both challenging and rewarding! I took a small amount of Chinese in high school, but not enough to feel particularly confident. In fact, we took two years to get through the book that we are currently breezing through. I have a little bit of a background, but I am still finding Chinese to be a lot of work.

I think my pronunciation is my most difficult challenge to overcome. I know that sometimes I am messing up some tones, and sometimes I find myself less willing to speak in class, because I am worried that I will sound wrong! I think for the second half of the semester, I just want to focus on trying- our class is such a great place to make mistakes, and I think that in order to learn best, I need to just go for it, be corrected by 老师，and move on! Also, a few of us have been chatting about Chinese before class lately. It really helps me to talk to other people and hear them pronounce the words and tones, allowing them to correct mine! I also think this helps me feel more prepared for the tingxie.

I think that I need to review my vocabulary a little bit more regularly as well. This lesson, as we move away from being tested daily on the vocab, I think I have a few holes in my knowledge that I need to address, with a few activity words going unmemorized. I'm planning on reviewing my flashcards quite a bit over break, just to keep up with what we have been learning.

Chinese is hard, but I think it's a really exciting language to learn. I'm hopeful that one day I will be able to speak fluently, and I'm very excited by that prospect. My oldest brother is fluent in Chinese from his college experience, and I think it would be amazing to some day be able to keep up with him!

Deciding to take Chinese this semester was one of the best decisions that I have made here at UVA. After getting a bad signup time and finding that all of the classes I had originally planned on taking were full, I was left with an empty schedule and no idea of what classes I wanted to take the second semester of my first year. I had taken some Chinese lessons for a little less than a year in middle school and was always disappointed in myself that I had never continued on with it. Coming into college, I still had the desire to learn Chinese, but was worried that it would be a waste of time as I had already completed the general language learning requirement and may not even become fluent. I can say now that taking Chinese this semester has most definitely not been a waste of my time. Though I’m still not sure how fluent I will be by the end of my time here at UVA, I know that I will be as fluent as I want to be based on how much time and effort I put into my Chinese classes. I’m very impressed by the Chinese program here and by 老师’s teaching, and I know that I can succeed if I put my mind to it.

That being said, learning Chinese has not been without its challenges. I agree with Julia in that one of the biggest challenges is mastering the different tones. I often find myself confusing them or even pronouncing a word the wrong even when I know which tone it is. I think that this is just something that will improve with more speaking practice. Another weakness in my Chinese learning that I have discovered and am in the process of working on is that I tend to work really hard during the week and then don’t work as much on the weekends leading to me forgetting some of the characters. In order to address this I need to continue practicing my characters even on the weekends. I have found that writing the characters over and over while saying the word aloud helps me memorize them

So far, Chinese has been an interesting journey that has not been without its trials, but has helped me grow as a learner here at UVA, and for that I am thankful.

To be honest, as a fourth year (esp in the spring semester), I had no reason to take a 1010 level language course because of the notorious workload. Nonetheless, I have always viewed Chinese as one of the “useful” languages to know, even if it’s just the basics, so I just wanted to give it a try. I have not taken a language course since high school, so it was definitely challenging for me to get back into the momentum of learning a new language. Although it may be challenging, it will always be rewarding at the end and 老师 makes it enjoyable to learn.

My main issues are memorizing some of the characters and pronouncing the tones, as many of you can probably relate. What I do to better my learning is to constantly rewrite the characters, while spacing out my study time, so I can embed it into my muscle memory more efficiently. Another good trick I found is to just read the dialogues over and over, until I can read it without needing the English translation. I also noticed that the grammar workbook homework is extremely helpful for memorizing characters, because you have to write so much.

It feels like I have barely scratched the surface of the Chinese language, but it’s funny when I see Chinese characters outside of class and think to myself “oh I recognize that ONE radical/character”. I hope to learn more throughout the semester, so that I can recognize more outside of the classroom.

I've taken Chinese before, back in high school, so I was already pretty well versed in almost everything we studied so far this semester. I took this class because, as a first year, I wanted to start in on my language requirement. I had previously taken Chinese and didn't want to have to exert myself too much on another language, and so ended up taking a Chinese course. Taking the Chinese placement exam was really difficult, however, so I was willing to relearn a lot of the things I remembered learning in my high school Chinese class. I was instead pleasantly surprised by what I received instead.

The most important part of any course is the teacher. They determine the homework, the course structure, and what the attitude in the classroom is like. Nowhere has this lesson been hammered home to me than by my high school Chinese teacher. Homework was extreme, tests were often unfair or the material was not taught, and the lessons were almost always dreaded. I thought that was the standard for language classes in general, and was very happy to find that that was not the case here. Here I feel like I'm learning something new despite having learned this textbook before. The atmosphere in the classroom is always upbeat, the material is challenging but not crushing, and the homework is not punishing. So, thank you 老师.

My greatest weakness in Chinese the language is the pinyin. Characters are almost always distinctive enough to be memorable, and I am very good at these grammar rules that Chinese uses. Even pinyin's alphabetical translation of characters is simple. Tones, however, I am very bad at remembering and even worse at discerning. I just can't hear the tones be distinct. For now, my strategy for dealing with this weakness is to just memorize the tones with the characters, but that might start getting more difficult as we get to more characters.

I'm loving this class and I don't think it could be meaningfully improved in such a way that would make it more effective and more enjoyable. It is a class I'm glad I signed up for and it's filled with people who are not afraid to express themselves. Which makes it a great break from what I understood about language classes.

Despite living in a diverse cultural community back in Northern Virginia, I actually didn't have that much exposure to Chinese before I came to UVA. I did have a lot of friends who are Chinese over the years, but either they were raised in the U.S., so English was their first language, and even if they knew Chinese, there was not really an opportunity for me to hear it in a conversational or academic setting. Growing up in a Korean family in a neighborhood with a huge Korean community, however, I managed to retain a lot of my ability to speak Korean, which helps me communicate with my family.
I realized from my visits to South Korea was that Chinese is prevalent in many aspects of the culture. The calendars are annotated in Korean, I have seen my grandmother also take memos in Korean and Chinese characters, and landmarks are based on Chinese terminology. This made me realize how useful knowing Chinese could be in learning more about my culture and its history.
When I came to UVA, many of my closest friends were either Chinese international students, Chinese Americans, or were learning Chinese. This constant exposure to my friends speaking in Chinese made my interest in the language grow, and my friends convinced me that taking CHIN1010 could be fun. My initial thought was also that my prior knowledge in Korean could help me learn a lot of the words in Chinese. I was definitely mistaken.
After about two months in CHIN1010, I realized that Chinese is complex in many different ways. I was warned about the tones before I even took this course, and yet I was still taken aback by how confusing that aspect could be. There have been definitely multiple times where I just unconsciously ignore the tones, because memorizing the word as is already takes much effort for me, and had to be corrected on my pronunciation. As Jin said, tones are definitely a new concept for many of us, especially because neither English nor Korean, in my case, uses tones. However, it is a unique part of the Chinese language. This made me become more aware of how my friends spoke Chinese with tones, and yet have their own flow, compared to my rollercoaster that I call my tonal style. Some ways I've tried to learn the tonal aspects of the vocabulary was by visualizing the overall tones of words. For instance, bu2cuo4 has two tones that create almost a roof on the word in pinyin, which definitely helped me with memorizing a lot of the tones. Using my finger or moving my head to follow the tones when speaking also helped me track my tones.
Like most students, another obstacle I had with learning Chinese was memorizing the characters. Because English is a mainly phonetic language, these words I'm typing currently don't mean much other than that it spells out words, which have meanings. Chinese, on the other hand, have the really fascinating trait of having a very visual writing system. Each character almost paints it's own picture, giving a hint to its meaning. I remember when our 老师 (lao3shi1) taught us how to remember how to write 跳舞(tiao4wu2), and used the picture of a person jumping over a river for tiao4, which actually means to jump on its own. I try to use similar ways to memorize characters for dictations, and it really helps to try to reason why certain characters are arranged in particular ways.
All in all, before I go off on another tangent, I feel like i have developed an appreciation for Chinese, and learning new words is still exciting. I think our 老师 is really great at providing a comfortable learning environment for us and is one of the nicest professors I've met at UVA. I hope you also find joy in learning Chinese as much as we do! 再见 (zai4jian4)！

When I was a baby, my parents first taught me how to speak Taishanese Chinese before teaching me English. It has much less speakers than Mandarin. My family on my Mother's side immigrated from a small town in Hong Kong, which is why they do not speak Mandarin. However, my parents told me that I didn't like speaking in Chinese and would only speak in English after I learned both. Soon, because I only spoke in English, I forgot all the Chinese I knew. After I started Preschool, my parents would take me to Chinese school on Saturdays, which taught Mandarin. I only lasted three years before I quit.
Mom knows Cantonese and Taishanese while my Dad speaks Cantonese and Mandarin. In my family, I'm the only one who cannot speak more than one language and I've always regretted not being able to speak to my parents in their native languages. Now I finally have an opportunity to learn and it also counts as a humanities credit!
This class so far has been challenging. One of the things I struggle with the most is tone, specifically the second one. In other languages, you only need to be careful with the pronunciation, but Chinese you have even more careful with how you speak.
Additionally, everything about CHIN1010 is more frequent than my other classes: the tests, the homework, and the meeting times. It feels a lot like high school all over again, since this is the only class that I attend every single day. It is also a lot to keep up with the homework and dictation. Other classes assign homework that is due once or twice a week, but the frequency of class makes the workload up to five times what I do for other classes.
All in all, I don't regret taking this class. While it may take up a lot of time, I am glad I am finally able to speak with my parents. This is only the first semester, so I still have a long way to go to really be able to have a full conversation with them, but I'm looking forward to the day when I will be able to tell when my family is talking about me and thinking that I can't understand them.

I’ve been studying Chinese for at least four years now. Chinese is and has been important to me as a culture thing, and my family, who are first generation Chinese immigrants on my mother’s side, have spoken it around me for a very long time. Despite my former experience, It is very refreshing to return to the basics and strengthen the weaknesses I’ve been carrying for a long time now. I found that as I advanced in my highschool Chinese, my discipline in studying waned as time passed on. I have progressed more in the first few months in college than I have an entire year in highschool, and I hope to not repeat my mistakes and continue to improve. On top of learning more about the language, I really enjoy rediscovering what I know about Chinese and Chinese culture.

As it seems many of my classmates are agreement in what the hardest aspect of Chinese is, the area that still needs the most work are also my tones. I’ve had trouble with them for many years, but Chinese 1010 is the first class that focuses on them so much. Feel free to correct me if need be.

In terms of methods that I find useful, simply drilling characters over and over has been the tried and true method for me. I also try practicing mentally as I go about my day and always ask a question when I can when I don’t something, too.

Similar to everyone else, I have the same sentiments about CHIN1010. It has definitely been one of the most rewarding classes that I have ever taken at UVA. I actually came into UVA having already finished my language requirement (in Spanish) and wanted to continue pursuing Spanish, because of my packed schedule in my first and second year. Now, as a third-year, I have a lot of flexibility in my major to take whatever courses I want, so I decided to take Chinese.

Because I am one of the “older” members in the class, I do have trouble giving my all to this class, which is one thing I am trying to fix. My other classes are all 3000, 4000, 5000 level classes and I am a leader in multiple organizations, so I think this has one of the biggest challenges to my ability to truly dive deeper into the Chinese language. Another challenge that I have, which is the same challenge I have always had growing up, is my speaking comprehension. In every encounter with a language, I have always been bad at speaking, and this includes English, Korean, and Spanish. I have always felt more comfortable reading and writing when learning a new language, because I am a visual learner, not an auditory learner. This makes learning Chinese 100x harder for me, because this language has multiple tones and puts a heavy emphasis on sound in order to communicate. I am aware of this, and I am hoping to find more native speakers that I can just converse with in order to get better. One thing that I think Huang 老师 can help with is giving us music, tv-shows, and other resources to listen to in order to get better at hearing stuff and learning to say sentences. That helped me a lot when I was learning Spanish.

I have learned the best way for me to remember characters is to come up with funny or weird ways to memorize them. For example, the way to write “family” still sticks in my head after Huang 老师 showed us a cool way to remember to write it. In addition to this, I think repetition is a key factor in retaining the information. Now, when I write “我” it comes to me so naturally that I don’t even need to think about it, because we have used it so many times in our homework and conversations in class.

Overall, I have really enjoyed my experiences with this class. The other people in the class and lenient grading have made it more fun than stressful, and I hope to continue improve in not only my fluency but confidence in the language.

Chinese attracted me because I had always thought the characters were interesting and pretty (like calligraphy-wise). When I can to UVA a lot of my friends had recommended taking CHIN 1010 to me and I thought it would be nice to be able to speak to my roommate’s parents since they only speak Chinese.
I can relate a lot with everyone else with the tone pronunciation. It becomes really difficult to specifically speak words with the tones and it is hard for me to tell if I am practicing the tones correctly by myself. I think 老师 is great with encouraging while correcting us at the same time when we speak in class. There are definitely a lot of assignments but I really enjoy seeing the amount of characters I know and the amount of information I can give in Chinese increase. I feel like every Grammar assignment my Chinese has improved and I can elaborate more in complex sentences rather than simple short sentences. Jin mentioned that it’s kind of cool to see Chinese characters around and be able to recognize bits and pieces and I agree. I like to spot characters I recognize as I pass by signs and the like.
It has been a great experience for me so far and learning a new language is always fun! 我很喜欢我的同学和我的中文老师！

Chinese is a hard language to learn. I think on the world rankings of hardest languages to learn, it's consistently in the top 5 following Arabic. It is also, however, the native language of over 1.2 billion people, meaning that the Chinese language provides 1.2 billion opportunities for me to connect intimately with a proudly unique people, culture, and economy. Perhaps I'm bias due to my background, but it is these opportunities that motivate me to remain focused in my pursuit of my fluency in the language and to understand that the 听写s, 功课，和考试 are all done with a much higher purpose than completion or a grade. Chinese is a window into understanding myself and currently, the blinds are shut. I want to lift them up.

This extends into my final project.

I agree with Julia that Chinese is a really difficult language to learn. It takes constant upkeep, and so I think my overall goal extends beyond this class. I want to focus on keeping my Chinese sharp over the summer, whether that means calling my 中国朋友 and forcing myself to 说话 over the电话 (my 说话中文 is definitely my greatest struggle), or reviewing vocabulary. I want to come back in the fall ready to keep going, and prepared to do even better this coming semester.
I think I would like to use my final project to explain a bit more about my life as a college student. It's been an interesting first year at school, making new friends but still thinking of my family back home, and I want my movie to explore that balance a bit.

I feel like I am definitely sensing that I'm reaching a transition point in my path to learning Chinese. After getting past that first obstacle of deciding to learn Chinese and becoming familiar with studying the language, I am at a crossroads. Do I continue learning Chinese or do I stop here, with my basic knowledge of Chinese? What makes me continue my interest in Chinese is the strong application it has in my everyday life. As many of us know, so many languages are connected. In the same way Spanish has a similar syntax and vocabulary to English, Chinese is very interconnected with Korean. This makes learning the language so much fun, because I get to make connections with Korean words that I have been using without much thought to Chinese vocabulary we are learning in class. My strategies to finish this semester strong is by reserving time in my schedule to go over the dialogue and write out the sentences myself. I make my own version of the dialogue in the textbook and align them by 拼音，汉子，和 英文 to make it easier to compare the sentences when 我准备听写。我也跟我的同学联系说中文，因为我觉得说中文说得不好，所以我下课以后得练习说中文。It also helps that my 中国朋友 is also my housemate, because I can just knock on her door if I am confused about something. My motivation to excel in Chinese stems from the fact that so many of my friends are fluent in Chinese and my goal is to one day be able to speak with them in Chinese in casual conversations. Also, I want to be able to show my family how Chinese is so connected with their native tongue and encourage them to try learning Chinese as well. I hope to able to one day be able to learn songs in Chinese and watch Chinese dramas as well, because I hear Chinese songs from my friends but I don't understand the lyrics.
For my final project, I plan to create a video where 我跟我的中国朋友吃午饭，聊天人。 There's a Chinese restaurant I've been to pretty often at UVA, called Ginkgo, and their menus are also written in Chinese, so that place has been a really fun place to practice my Chinese and apply what I learned in everyday life.

I believe my motivation to learn Chinese and other languages stems from the fact that I want to get to understand different perspectives from people around the world. Like Julia, I also want to be connected with those 1.2 billion people and I want to know what kinds of things they think of. There's this article talking about how the language you speak may affect the way we think. To steal from that article, it notes that "For centuries, people thought that words were just labels for objects, and that different languages merely attached different strings of sounds to things—or, more accurately, to concepts. Now it was suggested that the world might be perceived differently by people speaking different languages. Or, more radically, that people could only perceive aspects of the world for which their languages have words." (How the Language We Speak Affects the Way We Think by Antonio Benítez-Burraco Ph.D.). I want to emphasize that last section. That is the reason I want to learn Chinese. For a lot of the words in Chinese, there are no English equivalent. Some are even extremely difficult to give an English explanation to, and my 中国朋友s know this struggle whenever I ask them to explain the definition of a Chinese word.

In all honesty, I can't really say that I have a strategy to push on. I just have a mindset that I have to try my best and in order to do that I must study. I guess if I were to offer my two cents, I would say that it's because I live solely in the present and the immediate future. I try to only think of the work I have to get done rather than the reward of not having to do work after I finish something. I want to offer a good representation of myself to my professors, so I try to do the best that I can to show what I am capable of. Not only do I want to do it for my professors, I also want to prove to myself that I am able to do things I never thought I'd be able to do. With this in mind, I try to push myself forward with each step so that I can just look back in the end and see how far I've come.

For my final project, I think I will talk about myself and my journey with learning languages (concentrating with Chinese) and how I plan to continue. I might use a video or a powerpoint as a medium, but I'm not quite sure yet.

I've always been interested in getting to know the world all around me, not just the area around me. But in this day and age, even the area around one is always one that is very global in perspective. Living near Washington D.C., people from all over the world have always surrounded me and I've been at the forefront of a major cultural mixing bowl. In my neighborhood, there are families from dozens of different countries and with them, they bring several different languages and cultures. At my various summer jobs and internships in the past, I've also interacted closely with people all over the world. Chinese is currently the fifth language I'm learning and with each new language I learn, my capability of forming an intimate relationship with someone whose life has been so different yet similar at the same time is immensely increased. Each new language opens up a door to a room full of new people and Chinese opens the door to one of largest and most influential rooms of all. I want to be able to enter that room and be part of that large group of unique individuals and work to help bring together all of those different rooms around the world into one. Learning Chinese is a very important step towards that ultimate goal.

For my Chinese project, I plan to make a film with all of the Chinese friends who I knew 以前学中文和我的中国朋友现在。It'll be a good way for me to put together all that I've learned with many native speakers who are more than happy to help me learn more about them and their cultures.

I really enjoy learning new languages and the cultures that match them. I like to compare how each country lives and speaks with American culture and also Korean culture. In high school I focused on learning Spanish because I felt it was an easier language, however, I ended up being given the opportunity to take a trip to El Salvador on a missions trip with my church. The fact that I could connect and communicate with the people I met there made such a difference and I felt I was able to have a larger impact on their life. It was then that I realized how important and amazing knowing another language is. Maybe the effects are not immediately seen, but understanding just one more language gives you the opportunity to meet and connect with a new person even if it's random. I could help one more person find their destination or even just introduce places to a wandering tourists. All languages have their own nuances and habits like how 要是别人说：“你家很大和很漂亮。“ 你可以说：”哪里哪里。“ In America, most people would respond with a "thank you" and compliment them back, however, in China it is much more common to answer modestly. Just little things like this are interesting to me.
I would say what drives me to continue learning is because I just have so much fun learning a new language that the work does not really feel like work. I like to take a break from my other school and finish my Chinese homework or try practicing Chinese with my friends. It is like I am in kindergarten again and I want to show off to my friends how well I can write Chinese and speak it, I get fascinated when I see my vocabulary continue to grow and become more and more robust.
For my final project I am thinking of recreating me meeting my first year roommate, but it goes differently because I can speak to her and her parents in Chinese. I am not completely sure yet, but I think this is the direction I am thinking about.

Since the last reflection, I have been thinking more about how I want to grow from this class. I signed up for CHIN1010 as an elective class, because I wanted to be able to learn a language that so many people around the world speak. This is what many of my peers have said, and I totally agree with that thought process. I have never taken a language class at UVA, so I really underestimated how much time this class would take. One difficult aspect of Chinese is that you can’t guess what a word is if you forgot it and you can’t try using your knowledge of English to help you with grammar. So, I’ve really learned the importance of spending time to really learn well the Chinese characters and their definitions. Grammar has also been getting more difficult in the class, so I’m going to spend more time on that as well.

One big obstacle for me for this class is time. I just wish I had more time to spend on Chinese, but I just quickly memorize the words for each day and just do the homework. I don’t spend time practicing my Chinese with a Chinese friend or practicing the old stuff we have learned, and that is because I don’t have much time in my schedule to spend more time on this class.

For tips, I have learned that the best way to do well on 听写 for me is to write down the sentences in pinyin and say the words out loud while writing down the Chinese characters to the pinyin. Also, for efficiency sake, I go through each sentence and only focus on the words I don’t recognize or know how to write. This makes doing 听写 quicker and smarter.

In terms of juggling everything, I don’t think I can give good advice on how to stay on top of things and finish strong. I’m not doing as well I would like in this class, so I definitely appreciate everyone else’s comments. I hope to just have more free time on the weekends to study up on Chinese and review more often.

For my final presentation, I hope to make a music video where I rap in Chinese. I would want to make it funny and I can touch upon different topics that we have focused on in class such as family, hobbies, and school. I will even include Wang Peng and Li You in it.

To be honest, I'm not too pressured by the upcoming tests and assignments, save for the final project. I hate taking videos, so, like Pam, I'm going to try for a powerpoint project or something similar. In general, Chinese at this level is not that complex of a language, as I find the grammar itself to be not that difficult or complicated. The real challenge is in the new vocabulary because the characters are growing larger, more complicated, and harder to draw than they were in the beginning of the class. Nevertheless, I'd much rather take this than any other language offered.
As for how I deal with the schedule, I try to do the homework before, but on the same day as, class. That way I have it fresh in my mind as I come into class and take the 听写. Other than that, I really try to fit my homework in around my other classes and their homework. I find that this solution generally works pretty well.
For my final project I'm going to try to do a powerpoint on some part of Chinese culture, maybe comparing it to American culture. It all depends on the rubric and guidelines for the project. All I know is that I'm going to try and avoid a full on video.

At first, I wanted to be able to talk to my parents and my other family. It was always frustrating to be left out of conversation during the holidays, when then whole family went to my Aunt's house to celebrate. While this is still extremely important to met, during the course of the semester, I've also become interested in visiting China, or maybe even studying abroad. Even though both my parents are from Hong Kong, I realized there is still so much I don't know about the culture and the people. It would be nice to get in touch with my background.
For my final project, I think I will either record a video or create a voiceover for a video of pictures from this year, though I'm not completely sure of my direction at the moment.
