Poor Mrs. Mallard, feeling oppressed and not wanting to continue her existence, suddenly gets her wish. Her husband, who was the bane of her existence is dead. The story reminds me of when I was younger and hearing stories about love everlasting. In the past when you married it was for better or worse, there was no "until I'm tired of you". Even though Mrs Mallard is extremely unhappy with her situation in life, she is married and will remain that until death do us part. When told that her husband was dead she was initially upset until it dawns on her that he's gone. In the end it turns out her husband is alive, the shock of seeing him literally kills her. As described by the narrator, "she had died of heart disease - of joy that kills" (Chopin 151).

The young girl in the story is not a typical "wild
child"; she is going through a normal experience that teenagers go
through. She is tormented by the loss of what she believes to be her first
love. The overindulgence of alcohol is a prime example of inexperience. The descriptions
of the narrator’s “friends” are broad examples of the different attitudes and
behaviors of teenagers.

The girls in troop 909 are minding their own business when they are accused of racial comments towards another group of girls. When the black girls confront troop 909 they are stunned to realize the girls are handicapped. All of the sudden Arnetta is faced with having to explain to troop 909's leader why they were being attacked. Arnetta is motivated by hate and a feeling that all white people are against blacks. By the end of the story most of the girls if not all have learned that just because your skin color is different doesn't mean you will experience racism

The character Emily is a case of a young woman who was never allowed to explore life on her own. Once she lost her father she had no one to look out for her leaving her for the most part defenseless. When she meets Homer she becomes fixated on him. When he attempts to leave her she takes drastic measures to keep him by her side.

The ability of a town to kill one of their own and act like it was not unusual is baffling.
