The song's speaker is a person who is taken to jail for their homosexual actions. The song was written to express Todrick's pain of how others have treated him and those like him for such a long time, leading into how the story of the play portrays his message clearer than this one song. Todrick has not been to jail or anything, but has experienced a lot of hate for being openly gay. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Todrick_Hall

The Audience is the LGBTQ community and those who see being gay as a sin or wrong. His purpose conveyed throughout is to tell others that their is hope for a better life even if all these people around you tell you what you truly feel is wrong, but to you is right.

Todrick uses logos consistently throughout the video to show the reality of what it feels like to be in a place where being gay is shamed. In the video, you see how the inmate talks about his passion for fighting for what he says is a “new beginning”, Hall uses logos through these life lesson lyrics; The lyrics convey a message that people should realize about the world. The lyrics expressed his pain by being passionately written from prior experiences.

The second example of lyrics is “Here today and gone tomorrow, and the world will just continue spinning” exemplifying how everything else in the world still goes on even if he dies. “I could try to leave behind the kind of legacy they might diminish” relates to what I stated previously; leaving behind a legacy is one thing but having others who carry on your legacy is what matters more. Relating back to how those who make a difference cannot be the only ones trying to make a change, or it will never happen. Leading on a legacy even when the person your looking for to lead you is gone.

Ethos Lyric Analysis

You see Hall as an inmate clenching his hands, singing with him, looking upwards towards a light during these lyrics. He shows the audience how he does not know if he will be alive tomorrow and if he is not, he has hope he will get into heaven. Also, he plans to send out a message of hope to his audience that even if he went to jail for being who he is, God does not view him as someone unfit for heaven. Saying, "Though my flesh might fad to dust will my heart be changed to gold," he is showing that even if he dies, he had a good heart in the end, he cared for others, loved others, and was the best person he can be and that being gay did not mean he was a bad person/undesired individual. Hall expresses that being gay should not come across that he is sinful or having a twisted mind and that if he were not gay, would society see him as a whole new person with a heart of gold? As he repeats in the following lyrics, "Somebody tell them" (society) that there is something we have gotta be missing" He wants someone else to tell society that there is more to this situation than they see through a biased point of view. They do not understand what the LGBTQ community feels and how it is not a choice to be queer but since being straight is more common, they see homosexual relationships as disgusting/a crime to be punished for.

Pathos- Analyzing how Hall uses similes, hyperboles, and wise knowledge tying into the emotions it gives off. The use of the lyrics “I will fight to stay alive just like a candle burning in the window” shows the persistence he has to continue fighting with passion for homosexuality to be a normalized thing in society. Leading to the hyperbole example “I’m gonna roar till they hear me” is a bit of an overstatement because, in a literal sense, Hall is not roaring. He is being loud and outgoing about his stance, wanting society to listen to how he feels and understand the struggles he has gone through—trying to be heard out from others. Hall uses wisdom in this last lyric quote by saying, “The answer isn’t do or die or wrong or right it’s hiding in the middle” showing how others should be more open-minded about understanding the other sides stance on a subject and that coming together with a compromise or one set answer that there should be a middle ground of respect to expect.
