4. Deborah Sampson’s role in the Revolutionary War was that of a courageous and determined warrior who refused to be constrained by societal expectations. Despite the challenges she faced as a woman, Sampson fought bravely and proved herself to be a skilled and valuable member of the Continental Army. Her remarkable story serves as a testament to the power of the human spirit and the contributions women have made to our nation’s history. 

5.Starting in 1792, Deborah began what would become a decades-long battle to receive back pay and pension relief from her time in service. Sampson became publicly known during the 1790s, when she petitioned the Massachusetts State Legislature for the pension payments that had been withheld from her on the basis of her gender. 

6.She was given the dangerous task of scouting neutral territory to assess British buildup of men and materiel in Manhattan, which General George Washington contemplated attacking. In June of 1782, Sampson and two sergeants led about 30 infantrymen on an expedition that ended with a confrontation—often one-on-one—with Tories. She led a raid on a Tory home that resulted in the capture of 15 men.   

7.Life everyday was very chaotic. Fighting in wars, preparing for them, and scouting all while trying to hide her true gender.  

8.During her service as Robert Shurtleff, for over two years, Sampson’s true gender had escaped detection despite close calls. When she received a gash in her forehead from a sword and was shot in her left thigh, she extracted the pistol ball herself. She was ultimately discovered—a year and a half into her service—in Philadelphia, when she became ill during an epidemic, was taken to a hospital, and lost consciousness. 

9. Sampson took part in the Battle of Monmouth, the Siege of Yorktown, the Battle of Rhode Island, and the Battle of Germany Flatts.

I lived in New Jersey during the war and was in the Battle of Monmouth.

I was a Patriot.

I earned the nickname Molly Pitcher for supplying soldiers with drinking water in the heat of combat. 

5. What problems did you face? 

A few years after the Revolutionary war, my husband died. I also faced lots of financial hardship. 

6. What was one accomplishment that you had during the Revolutionary War? 

I helped soldiers by giving them drinking water in the middle of the Battle of Monmouth. 

7. What was life like on a daily basis for you? 

Because I was a soldier’s wife, I followed my husband on campgain, and did things like washing clothes and dishes. 

8. What were some dangers that you faced? 

I ran in open fire several times to give soldiers drinking water. And when my husband had been wounded, I took over the cannon. 

9. What one event stands out in your mind as the most important for you during the Revolutionary War?  

That day I had shown that any person, irrespective of gender, could rise to the occasion when the time had come, when their issue and companions needed them most. 

10. Just like every other Patriot, I thought Taxation without representation was unfair.

5. I faced several problems, including grievances with the Articles of Confederation, financial hardship, marital discord, and disappointment in the American people and their elected representatives, serving as a lieutenant colonel and aide-de-camp to General George Washington.

6.Implemented a revenue system through tariffs and taxes. He recognized the importance of financial stability and sought to address the massive debts accumulated during and after the Revolutionary War.
