On the day of his move, our character Greg is packing up photographs and memories of their relationship with his partner Manuel, who is also apprehensive about coming out to his parents. When Greg's parents arrive unexpectedly to help him pack, he kicks out Manuel and attempts to conceal the proof of their love. However, with the assistance of some rainbow magic, Greg switches bodies with his dog Jim, making hiding his secret increasingly difficult. Out is a short film that uses various techniques to illustrate the idea of love and acceptance. Throughout the film, Greg pushes himself away from people who come for him to protect himself from rejection. The motifs of Learning acceptance and the value of being honest with their loved ones and love are unconditional. They shouldn't be tainted by prejudice, or intolerance is evident and provides a solid and insightful message. The filmmaker uses camera focus, specific lighting, and sound design to convey this claim and instill this message using various film techniques.

The soundtrack used in the film can convey an unspoken tone or perception in a scene. The first scene where see soundtrack is used effectively is in the interaction between Greg and Manuel, in which a quaint yet upbeat sound gives a positive connotation to their relationship. In the next scene, when Greg's parents show up, the music abruptly stops, giving a feeling of being brought back to reality and having to face his problems. The soundtrack helps move the plot along emotionally and allows the audience to feel the same emotions that our characters within the short are feeling. Throughout the short, the music allows the audience to go through the same emotional beats as our characters. The music is happy when Greg is happy, and when we reach the climax, the music swells. This technique is used to significant effect to allow the audience to feel the message and helps strengthen the base of the emotional message of the short.

In the scene, we can see how the focus is used effectively to convey the focal point to the audience; in this scene, we can see the main character pushing his partner away when his parents come, refusing to open up and be honest with them about his love in fear of rejection and disapproval. The filmmakers help captivate the audience with the powerful, focused shot of someone pushing away their loved ones in fear of being vulnerable and honest because of the rejection they may face. The use of pathos helps us feel for the character and how they are torn in this situation.

Lighting can play a vital role in how the audience perceives a scene and the tone and idea conveyed. In the first scene, we see a shot of Greg and Manuel's portrait with the frame broken, surrounded by lowkey lighting after he hides the portrait from his mom while he is in the form of a dog; the lowkey lighting conveys the idea of being closed off from his parents as well as from himself and his relationship, the lowkey lighting gives the audience a subconscious feeling of sorrow, this is used effectively to convey Greg's perception of his relationship before coming out to his parents as well as opening himself up. In the second scene, we see a vibrant light and tone set around the same portrait of him and his partner. Although it is the same portrait we saw on the floor, the tone and message being conveyed have entirely changed, the light surrounding the picture is happy and bright after he comes out to his parents about his relationship. After coming out to his parents, Greg has a different perception of his relationship, as shown by the lights and colors surrounding the picture. The lighting difference in both these scenes takes the same object and conveys two different messages to the audience. In the first scene, we feel sad for Greg and his partner due to the low lighting and lack of color. In the second scene, all the colors are vibrant and popping, conveying a joyful and lively tone to the audience.

Out is a short film that uses a variety of approaches to depicting the concepts of love and acceptance. To shield himself from rejection, Greg pulls himself away from people who come for him throughout the film. The themes of learning acceptance, the importance of being honest with their loved ones, and unconditional love are prevalent. They should not be stained by prejudice or discrimination and should deliver a solid and intelligent message. The director conveys this point and instills this message through numerous cinematic methods such as camera focus, specialized lighting, and sound design.
