         <description><![CDATA[<p>Long-term memory is when the brain stores information over extended periods of time. It could include days to a lifetime. Long-term memory allows the learner to retain knowledge, skills, and experiences that can be retrieved when needed. The Hippocampus plays a key role in forming and consolidating new memories, while the prefrontal cortex assists in organization and retrieval. The Amygdala also plays a part in long-term memory retention by involving the emotions associated with the memory. </p><p><br/></p><p><strong>How to improve long-term memory</strong></p><p>Research shows that long-term memory can be strengthened through repetition, elaboration, making meaningful connections, incorporating multi-sensory or emotionally relevant learning experiences (Baddeley, 2012). </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Short-term memory is when the brain holds information for a short time. This could be minutes or even seconds before one of two things happen. Either the information is forgotten or it is transferred to long-term memory. Short-term memory is also known as working memory. Working memory is when the brain remembers information long enough to use it. The pre-frontal cortex is the main player in maintaining short-term memory.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>How to improve short-term memory</strong></p><p><br/></p><p>Short-term memory can be improved through strategies such as chunking information into meaningful groups, rehearsal, and reducing distractions (Cowan, 2017). </p><p><br/></p>]]></description>

These can both be affecting the long-term memory functions in the brain. This type of amnesia occurs when the brain connections are disrupted. </p>]]></description>

The brain will retain the information for a short period of time and maybe just long enough to use the information. Once the information is used it will be transferred into long-term memory or forgotten. Short-term memory is also known as working memory. The pre-frontal cortex is mainly responsible for maintaining and organizing information, however, because of its small capacity, short-term memory is often lost by distractions or overstimulation. </p><p><br/></p><p><strong>How to improve short term memory</strong></p><p><br/></p><p>Short-term memory can be improved by strategies like chunking, rehearsing, reducing distractions and practicing focus methods (Cowan, 2017). By breaking up lessons into smaller blocks, it can improve the student's ability to retain and transfer the short term memories into long term. </p><p><br/></p><p><strong>How is short term memory affected by trauma</strong></p><p><br/></p><p>A brain injury can affect the short term memory similarly to the long term. If a person experiences trauma to the frontal lobe area it can impair short term memory by limiting the ability to keep information active and forgetting daily tasks. Following simple directions or remembering conversations can be a difficult task. </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Sensory memory is when the brain processes information from the external environment. Information such as what you see, smell and feel is stored for a short time. The memories created from our senses then transfers to our short-term memory or if the memory is tied to an emotion it transfers to our long-term memory. If it does not transfer to short-term memory it is not stored, it is forgotten.  </p><p><br/></p><p><strong>How to improve sensory memory</strong></p><p><br/></p><p>If you want to improve sensory memory it can be enhanced by methods that enhance attention, minimize distractions and use multi-sensory teaching strategies to reinforce learning.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>How is sensory memory affected by trauma</strong></p><p><br/></p><p>Sensory memory can be disrupted if the sensory pathways are disrupted. For example if a person lost their sense of smell, it can disrupt the sensory memory in processing and integrating sensory information. <strong> </strong></p><p><br/></p>]]></description>
