Family is 'sets of practices' rather than a static structure or entity in some theories. It is not considered as a place-bound unit but is constituted through a set of activities that aquire meaning under particular circumstances.
For transnational families, these refer to daily communication practices mainly through social and mobile media, such as making phone calls and browsing updates on family members' Facebook, depending on which they can have a sense of distant family's routines and rhythms, and maintain relationships.

Communication practices can have negative implications at an interpersonal level, as ambient co-presence on social media enables surveillance and thus heightens conflict. And privacy in social media is not an individual issue, but dependent on relationships between individuals within the same network.
