Sorry that your master teacher is keeping you from engaging in your culturally sustaining practices. I think that it would be gone a lot better, as you mentioned, if you got a chance to engage the students after the readings so that they did the group work together and then as a whole class rather than just copying. I think that your assignment would have been amazing if you got the chance to do it your way. Even if it was on the ipad, the discussion and venn diagram would have been a great assignment to reinforce what they learned.

In my classroom, students have access to Chromebooks. The normal strategy for my MT and I for making sure students are on task on their Chromebook is "proximity": we just make sure to walk by or stand by students who we think are distracted, and being nearby is a nonverbal sign to the students that they need to get back on task.

The tricky thing is, my classroom is huge--space wise--so we have a lot of room to walk around. Those rows in your class are really tight. Maybe if they work on activities like this in groups (so they have to move their desks together), there'll be walking room for you to walk around and see what they're doing on their iPads?

I'm sorry your MT decided it was best for them to copy yours. Maybe allowing them to share with a partner wether they agree with the diagram or not. Allow them a few minutes to add some points to the diagram after they have shared! That way when  they turn them in you can still learn something about the students.

That way the students can feel heard but your teacher can still stay away from having documented personnel information.

I am worried about this for when I become a teacher. Do you think white teachers have a tendency to stereotype kids into not being able to do the work and giving up? This seems to be what I'm observing in real life practice...I want to promote literacy (reading and writing in history) and I am afraid I too will end up lowering my expectations. I didn't help alot with your Venn Diagramm issue.  I find that teachers sometimes just let students copy the work instead of thinking for themselves just so they get the assignment done and on to the next thing.   It's easier than struggling against them.  Jennifer Jacobs

I know the class is cramped and walking around may be difficult. Consider a think-pair-share and perhaps exits tickets. Both or either of which can be done on the iPad.

Here are the suggestions I wrote down as I heard them (from both of our presentations):
-class discussion
-use doodling in class to your advantage
-Tori: roleplaying (Besties became Luther and the pope. Students remembered who played the roles more than the roles themselves but could answer questions about what they saw.)
-think pair share
-group work
-intense scavenger hunt (walk around, find the person)
-Are they listening in lecture and applying?
-set smaller goals
-freewrite, hyper focus on each step
-encourage small tasks using bold words ("Fantastic!")
-Ask a shy kid specific questions, cheer when they get it right.
