Located in what was the center of Tenochtitlan, Mexica´s Templo Mayor was constituted in the heart and origin of Mexico City. The temple represented for the Aztecas, the fundamental center of their worldview; from there the four directions of the universe started. It was the place through which one ascended to the celestial levels or thirteen heavens and, at the same time, through which one descended to the Mictlan or underworld. At the top of the pyramid were the shrines of the god of water and fertility Tláloc and the god of war Huitzilopochtli, which were accessed by two steps, this space was the sacred site par excellence.
The archaeological zone is crossed by a walkway that allows you to see the ruins up close, among which you can see, among many other things, representations of snake heads. A jewel of colonial architecture, it is the largest in Latinoamerica and the main Catholic temple in our country. Built over three centuries, it began in 1573 and was completed until 1813 by the neoclassical architect and sculptor Manuel Tolsá, reflecting in the same construction the different architectural styles of the viceregal period since it has Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical elements that the make it one of a kind. Built with gray quarry, it measures 110 meters long by 54.5 wide, inside the walls are made of stone and the floor is marble from Puebla. It has five large altars, 14 chapels, the choir area (one of the most prominent elements in this enclosure) ornamented in the Baroque style with two monumental organs and furniture from the Asian colonies of the Spanish empire, highlights the stalls, a bay, a chapter house, a sacristy, two dressing rooms and five main doors. The eastern tower has 18 bells and the western tower has seven. This fascinating temple has a floor plan in the shape of a Latin cross with three main doors leading to the capital's zócalo (the one in the center is a jubilee door that is only open on special occasions).

The construction of this impressive building began in 1905 and lasted almost thirty years. Made of marbles of different origins and decorated with sculptures; Inside it has geometric and pre-Hispanic motifs and is adorned with murals by Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Rufino Tamayo, Jorge González Camarena and Manuel Rodríguez Lozano. The glass mosaic curtain that adorns its main theater, which has a capacity for 2,000 attendees and is considered one of the most notable in the country, also stands out. The site is home to the National Museum of Architecture, as well as national music and dance groups.
