Our final stop at the Reconciliation Pole really struck me, especially when I saw the pattern of skeletons carved beneath the " Residential school ", on both side of the pole. Looking at the faces of the indigenous children, I got goosebumps despite the big sun.

"Saying it makes a living land into “natural resources.” If a maple is an it, we can take up the chain saw. If a maple is a her, we think twice...The arrogance of English is that the only way to be animate, to be worthy of respect and moral concern, is to be a human. (Kimmerer, 2017, p.133)"
Personally, I couldn't agree more with these two sentences and can relate them to my context. Language itself is much more than a simple way of communication, but also conveys the underlying philosophy and wisdom of a specific community.
However, when facing the dominant culture, usually promoted by the ruling governemnt, the minority group would face cultural colonization, in which their own culture may be gradually marginalized, leading to one homogeneous culture.

"I was ready to give up. I had learned a few words, done my duty to the language that was taken from my grandfather (Kimmerer, 2017, p.131)."
Under the impact of neoliberalism, it is not unfamiliar that one's knowledge of language has always been treated as one example of human capital and is sometimes seen as an indicator of one's future wealth. Under such influence, revitalizing languages spoken by the minority community faces complicated situation globally.
In my context, some languages used by ethnic Chinese without formal writing system are threatened with extinction. This is worsened by the fact that the majority of local ethnic young people are keen on learning Mandarin Chinese, envisoning the economic benefits this may bring about.
Thus, the process of decolonization in terms of language and culture should not only be done bottom-up, but also top-down (by the government).
