A letter isn’t going to make everything 100% okay again. I feel that there needs to be action involved. Words do speak however actions speak louder, and will make a detrimental effect on the community of the First Nations people.

I do feel like an apology doesn’t cover for all the awful, traumatic things that the kids had to go through. The parents who are receiving the apology, might not cover for losing their kids. They should have done more than just an apology.

The Prime Minister uses a serious and calm tone in this apology. It is a very serious and needed topic to be discussed so it was very important to be discussed with seriousness and apologetic words and tones. An apology was needed and the Prime Minister’s word choices were well thought out to be sincere and acknwlegde the facts and how wrong these actions were.

I believe that they can start with addressing and fulfilling the 94 calls to action proposed by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. These calls to action address a multitude of different subjects such as child welfare, education, health, etc. These will allow physical action and a way for us as a country to move forward into a better future. As well we need to go to the basics and ensure that the
United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples is properly followed. This ensures their rights are solidified and equal among all people. You would think that it would already be there but some things such as clean water are still not there. These two declarations provide a framework for our country and would allow action to truly speak for how we feel about our past.
- Avery

We talk a lot about the stuff in the middle with residential schools but not much else. We don’t talk about how the residential schools came into being or how racism began, but we talk a lot about what it became. We also don’t learn about issues that are still prevalent today or good things that have happened to the indigenous communities. One thing that is optimistic is there are signs on the highways that show treaty boundaries and when you switch to a different treaty and shows greater respect for the treaties and the Indigenous people who signed them. Another optimistic thing is the Pope coming to Canada to make an apology because to survivors it’s important that an apology is made on the soil where the crimes took place and hopefully the Pope will one day make an apology on each treaty land.
