How we created our group composition (theme and chords)

We were initially put into group of 5 people. This was, Selin, Cleo, Shannon, Daniel and myself. Within this group we needed to compose and record an original song. We were also given two themes to work with. These themes helped to shape the song and lyrics. The themes were death and relationships. These were good themes as they worked well together. We were able to successfully put together a musical piece which worked both musically and lyrically. We decided our song theme would primarily be the death of a relationship.
We had two instrumentalists and three vocalists. Daniel was playing the electric guitar, and I was playing the drums. Selin, Shannon and Cleo were all singing.
I think we were successful when creating our group composition. The themes we had worked for everyone and we were all able to express ourselves still in accordance with the chords and the themes we were given.
I think the expression of ourselves was key to creating a good piece of music. We all needed to have some connection to the music to be able to deliver with meaning. I think all of us in some way found relations to the themes. (explain the themes and how each person could connect)
Overall I think we managed to create a good composition that everyone felt they had input into. We used our chords that we were given and managed to merge them together with the theme of the song. If we were to try creating the composition again with the same themes and chords I think we should experiment with different instrumentation and we could try to use a different time signature to create a more exotic sound to the song.

Our audience and how we can appeal to a wider audience and our teamwork as a group

Our overall audience are young adults and teenagers. The lyrics might reflect how someone around that sort of age is feeling and they might feel the song is a good expression of their feelings. We think we have a suitable audience as teenagers and young adults are able to listen to the music with no difficulty. They can also buy and download which makes the sound better for this audience.
To appeal to a wider audience we could perhaps try to make the lyrics more relatable to people aged slightly older than a young adult. We could perhaps try to target people aged from 17 to 25. This may be difficult as it is quite a large age gap however we could change our lyrics slightly or the instrumental type to facilitate the aesthetics of these ages.
As a group I think we collaborated well together despite slight minor issues. We could successfully define what parts we each had and how they would work together. We had that all sorted out within two sessions. However we did have some issues as people were not always around to contribute to the group which made progression more challenging. In our final recording some members of the group were not included, this was difficult to work with as we had been practicing as though all of us would be working together and all contributing at the same time.
Overall as a group I think we worked well as a unit and managed to create a final song, unfortunately we did not perform as well as we could have done due to a lack of group members and bad organisation of the band. We could have improved our performance by practicing more, including the entire group in every rehearsal and structuring our practice more effectively.

My contribution, others contributions. WWW and What is less successful?

My contribution to the band was to play the drums. I was using a normal typical drum kit (snare, bass, toms and cymbals) I used basic drum beats to contribute to the guitar and vocals. I used a range of techniques these included instead of simply banging the snare drum down I was holding my hand down on the snare drum and playing it with the entire stick. This reduced the echo's created when usually hitting a snare but did not entirely remove all the sound from the hit. I also used a technique on the ride where instead of hitting the rim of the instrument I hit the 'bell' part of the ride creating a more sharp bell ‘ping’ sound with a low sustain. While rehearsing the drumming went very well and worked in time with the other members, however while we were recording in the studio I was not so successful. I had parts where I played out of time and this did not sound very good. I think this was because I am not used to playing the drums with other people without seeing them or being able to communicate. It was challenging to be in a different room and still be playing with the group. As a result the drums came out of time for certain parts of the song which caused the other members of the band to lose track slightly of what was going on.
My group all had a range of contributions. Daniel was playing the electric guitar and Shannon was the vocals. Selin and Cleo were also meant to be contributing vocals however we did not have them recorded when recording the final version. I found it interesting to work with Daniel as his general aesthetic is heavy metal guitar and this is very much reflected in the way he plays. It was interesting to work with this guitar style playing however very valuable as I have gained experience with working with metal style guitar. Shannon's vocals were also interesting to work with as I do not have much experience drumming with a vocalist (just instrumentalists) I found the experience and practice very valuable for myself, and will now be able to apply this experience for future events.
Overall I found working with very varied artists with completely different aesthetics interesting and good experience which I will be able to apply when I next play with other artists.
Throughout the creation of our song we had very high points but also some things that were not very successful. I think our highlights were writing the lyrics and merging this with the guitar and drums we all had a very clear idea of what chords we were supposed to be using and our two themes to which we adjusted our playing to, also rehearsals where we all had a clear idea of what was happening and who was doing what. Our studio session did not go very successfully however. We needed to record a number of times to get it working correctly however even then my drumming was slightly out of time.
If we were to properly record again , we would need to bear in mind our studio time and plan out exactly what we were doing per session.

Our song in terms of melody and rhythm

The melody of our song is very simple and has a clear and well structured melody. The verses are all set out in specific parts of the song. They always build up to a pre chorus and these always build up to the chorus. The song includes many chords and riffs. There are many riffs throughout the song which add to the texture and make the song slightly more complex. This is a good use of instrumentation and works with the vocals. This can be heard in the chorus. There is a very clear hook which is the pre chorus and chorus. The chorus is effective as it is repeated numerous times throughout the song and ensures people will remember it. The chorus is the hook which is effective because it gets louder. The dynamic of the song increases and there is a slight build-up. We have a bridge section which is just pure guitar solo. This is effective as it attracts the audience who enjoy guitar metal solos.
"Beautiful creature" is a very rhythmic song with a 4/4 time signature. there are typically 4 bars in each verse and there are very complex and thorough guitar riffs and notes being played throughout the song. The guitar adds most of the complexity to the song where it includes underlying rhythms, complicated riffs, heavy chords and even changes on the amp setup where the bridge is. The song is at 60 beats per minute and the song lasts for 4 minutes and 31 seconds. The guitar is the major leading part of the song and really leads the song on from the second part of the first verse. The drums use a different type beat pattern and instead of using the snare with a full hit the snare is held, they almost have a swing feeling to it and make the song swing in a more rock style genre direction. The percussion used helps to add to the rock "chilled out" vibe.

In our composition we are trying to communicate the death of a relationship. The first lyric is "falling so deep" this represents the entire feeling of the song. Someone has been in a relationship that has ended, and it is a tragic feeling. The person feels that they are falling, and its so deep they cannot get back up. A descending feeling. "six foot deep", this is showing how deep and despaired they feel. six foot deep hole is quite deep which might represent the fact they cannot escape. "so empty", this shows the singer feels very blatantly sad and upset. They're empty and they want to communicate this. The title of the song is beautiful creature, this is a interesting song title as the two words are contradicting. Mostly you would assume that a creature is an ugly horrific thing that is awful and unpleasant however the song is calling it beautiful , a word that is usually used to describe a swan or something else attractive. I think we have managed to communicate the songs general topic effectively within our song title which is good as it the first part of the song the listener comes into contact with

Our song in terms of instrumentation and dynamics

Our instruments used in our song are drums, guitar and vocals. These instruments have created a very interesting sound style. It has a very sad and melancholic feel to it. It is a very metal and electric sound style. The sound is very dense and the metal sound of the song helps to add effect and express the message we were trying to communicate. The song is a very miserable and reflective song. I think each instrument represents a certain feeling. The drums represent someone getting along with the death of the relationship in the sort of swing type feeling. the guitar represents the aggression felt and the sadness and despair. Overall I think we have made the song work with the instruments we used and created a very clear style along with sending a clear and strong message.
The song has a very clear dynamic expression. The song starts off very gradual and slow with not many things going on however it spreads and carries on to build up to a much louder and expressive crescendo. The vocals are very leading in this respect, they pull the song into a certain direction allowing the song to flow and still work with the dynamic changes. Our verses are usually quieter however in the pre choruses the volume is lifted and suddenly seems like an explosion of sound in the main chorus. The bridge also is a very vital part of the song as this is a guitar only solo and therefore making it a more expressive piece but also dynamically varied.
