Jean-Jacques Rousseau was born on June 28, 1712, in Geneva, Switzerland. He was born to Isaac and Suzanne, however Suzanne died just nine days later. Isaac was left to raise Rousseau. In 1725 Rousseau started to learn how to trade. Rousseau's father left when he was still young, so Rousseau was left to live with his uncle. Because of this, Rousseau never had a formal education.
Rousseau also left Geneva. In 1742 he traveled to Paris to become a musician/composer. For two years he served as a post at the French Embassy, which was in Venice. He met his future wife, Therese Levasseur, when he returned to Paris. Together the couple had five children.
When Rousseau was 30, he met up with another man and the two of them became exceptionally successful philosophers. He wrote many books, in which case most of them were well-liked.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau died in 1778 at the age of 66.

One of the ideas Rousseau believed strongly in was democracy. However, he didn't believe in representative, he believed in direct democracy. He thought the vote should go right to the citizens.
Rousseau also had the "general will" theory. He thought people were innocent by nature, they were good people from birth. He thinks we then were corrupted by civilization. It was believed that in the state of nature humans had lived completely for themselves, their own will.

Influence on Government

Rousseau influenced our government by the idea that people should vote. His works probably encouraged people to vote. We definitely vote here in America.
His books were very well written and educated many people. He got many people to see ideas and theories the way he did.
His "social contract" theory book talks a little bit about legitimate government. The Enlightenment was a period of new government ideas and Rousseau had plenty of them.
Rousseau had many great theories that educated people all over the world. While he might be the least educated of all the Enlightenment Thinkers, he had a great impact.

Thomas Paine agrees with Jean Jacques Rousseau on the idea that all citizens should be treated equal. Thomas Paine also strongly believed in voting. Paine wants a democratic republic. Which is almost what Jean Jacques Rousseau wanted. A republic democratic is a split between a democracy and a republic.
