For the first gym, you are going up against rock-type Pokémon. You can choose the water/grass type starters, but you can also catch various Pokémon that are those types before the first gym, including Budew and Psyduck. Budew has absorb when you catch it, but will learn mega drain at level 14, which is also the level of the gym leader’s ace. Psyduck can learn water gun at level 9 and disable at level 14. In this game, you get the old rod very early, so you can catch a magikarp south of the first city that you visit(the one where you have to find the clowns.) Another good option for this gym is machop. He comes with the move low sweep, a fighting type move. I recommend getting one of these Pokémon and not getting a water/grass starter.

This gym is grass type. If you chose chimchar as your starter, this will be easy. If you didn’t, it will still be pretty easy. On the way to the second gym, you can catch a ponyta. You can easily one shot the opponent’s ace if you have a poison point budew. When a pokemon is poisoned, their defense(both types) is halved. You can also set up a stealth rock(you get the TM from Roark) and get extra damage in the beginning. Also, you can catch a tailow before the first gym and use it against this.(at level 13, you can learn wing attack, and at level 21 you can learn aerial ace) Psyduck also learns confusion at level 21, but I wouldn’t use him as grass will kill him before he gets to do much damage.

The third gym is made up of fighting types. You can use a tailow to beat it using flying moves, or you can use a slowpoke using confusion(learns this at level 21) to defeat it. If you chose chimchar, I would recommend using him against the lucario, as fire is very good against the strong fighting-steel type.

This gym is made up of water types. If you caught a budew early on to beat the first gym, use that and you should be good. Also, early on, you could have caught a shinx. With that, you could use electric types to beat the gym, though you can’t use it on his quagsire. For quagsire, you can even use a water type and be super effective.

This gym is made up of ice types, though you will have to fight a few ace trainers with water type Pokémon in this gym. I would recommend using either a chimchar(If you chose that starter), or if you caught a ponyta for the second gym, you could use that against the ice types, and if you caught a shinx early on for the fourth gym, use that for the water types. Despite being an ice specialist, his main Pokémon is medicham, a fighting and psychic type Pokémon. Though, it still know ice punch. For this, I would use a psychic type pokemon, like psyduck(if you caught one earlier, but if you didn’t, you get more chances) for using a psychic type move, as it is still super effective against the Pokémon. Psyduck is the best choice for a psychic Pokémon for this battle because he also resists the ice type move ice punch.

This gym is a steel type gym, though most of the ace trainers have other types. If you chose chimchar, use this against the gym leader as he is not only a fire type, but also a fighting type(at his last evolution). Though, for the other trainers, you should use the rest of your party. If you didn’t choose chimchar, then use a ponyta or any other fire type Pokémon.(I recommend ponyta a lot because you get him early on.)

This is a ghost type gym. For this you can use a tailow if you caught one, to make a lot of the opponent attacks not affect you. You can also catch a houndour on route 215/214, which is great for this gym. Also on route 215, you can find a black belt next to a bridge(not a trainer), and he will give you the TM for Payback, which is a powerful dark type move.

This is an electric type gym. Once you get a bike, you can go back to the rock gym’s town, and go into the place that you couldn’t reach before when you were here. Go up the slope and into the cave. There, you should find TM26 Earthquake. As for a ground type Pokémon, you can catch a digglet easily, just look it up on a YouTube video.

The first Elite Four member is Aaron. He specializes in bug type Pokémon. If you got a chimchar as your starter, then use that, and you should be good. Though, if you didn’t, there are some other good choices. First off, you could use a ponyta(if you caught one for the second gym), and I recommend using a drifloon, as it is a ghost-flying type Pokémon, which is also good against Lucian, the last elite four member. Also, this is one of the few Pokémon that can learn Baton Pass, which switches to another Pokémon and gives the other Pokémon the positive stat changes of the user. This combined with the fact that drifblim can learn substitute and calm mind, makes it one of the best counters to the elite four.

The last Elite Four Member is Lucian. He specializes in psychic types. If you have a drifbloom on your team because you used it for Aaron, then you can use this against him to easily beat him. Though, if you are getting low, switch to another Pokémon after using calm mind then Baton Pass, and you will come in with a powered up Pokémon to start. I used this strategy to easily beat the Pokémon league.

The second Elite Four Member is Bertha. She uses ground types. I recommend getting the eevee from heart home city and leveling it up to level 33. Then eevee will learn baton pass, which is insane. You can use it against not only Bertha, but also Flint(the third elite four member) because he uses fire type Pokémon. Then evolve it into vaporeon. Then level it up two more levels to get aqua ring, which heals vaporeon every turn, but it is counted as a buff.(so does substitute) This means that you can use that then use baton pass, making the Pokémon that you switched to have the effect of this move. That combined with moves like substitute and calm mind is insane, though always have a move slot for an attack. This makes this Pokémon perfect for setting up. I used this strategy along with the strategy for drifblim to easily defeat the elite four

The Pokémon league champion of the Sinnoh region is Cynthia. She specializes in dragon type Pokémon. There are many counters that I am going to write to defeat her team.
#1
For number 1, we have my smeargle counter. Smeargle learns sketch, which copies a Pokémon’s move and makes it permanently smeargle’s. Get an opponent’s Pokémon(or wild Pokémon) to use soak. That will make the opponent a water type. So use sketch on that. Then, use sketch on an electric type move that deals damage. For side moves, I would get the moves(using sketch) calm mind and baton pass. Smeargle learns the move sketch every 10 levels, but it can not have two sketch moves at the same time. To get a smeargle, look on YouTube to find a video with the information.
#2
For number 2, we have my Vaporeon strategy. Use the same strategy as you did for elite four member #2 and #3, but this time change out the water move for an ice move with a TM
