The Sunda islands in Indonesia were once home to several populations of tigers, but due to human activity and habitat destruction, the number of these magnificent creatures has drastically decreased over time. Today, the Sumatran tiger is the only surviving subspecies of tiger in Indonesia and has an estimated population of only 400 individuals. This critically endangered species is listed as such on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.

Habitat destruction is one of the leading causes of the Sumatran tiger's decline. Large-scale deforestation, the conversion of forested areas into oil palm plantations and other commercial purposes have reduced their habitat, limiting their access to prey and leading to an increased incidence of human-tiger conflict. Human-tiger conflict is another significant factor that has contributed to the decline in Sumatran tiger populations. As human populations grow and move into areas that were once the natural habitat of these tigers, they increasingly come

The extinction of a species is more than just a loss of a beautiful animal. It creates a devastating impact on the entire ecosystem, leaving behind a scar that can have a ripple effect on other species and the environment. This is particularly true when it comes to the tiger. The preservation of this magnificent creature is critical not only for the sake of the animal but for the health and well-being of our forests. Forests are not just a collection of trees; they are also essential water catchment areas that provide ecological services such as clean air, water, pollination, and temperature regulation. The tiger plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance of the forest ecosystem. As an apex predator, it helps to keep the population of herbivores in check, which in turn protects the vegetation and the forest floor from excessive grazing. By protecting the tiger, we are also protecting the forest ecosystem, which is vital for the sustainability of human life.

Sumatran tigers occur only on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. The Sumatran tigers live in rainforests. They inhabit a diverse range of landscapes, from sub-mountain and mountain forests to lowland and peat forests. Their habitat is known for its lush and dense vegetation, which is home to a variety of plant and animal species. These forests are vital ecosystems that support various ecological functions such as carbon sequestration, soil conservation, water regulation, and air purification. They provide important resources such as timber, non-timber forest products, and medicinal plants. Also, these forests are the primary source of livelihood for many local communities that rely on them for their subsistence.

The Sunda tiger is a carnivorous apex predator that relies on a diet of meat, including deer, wild pigs, monkeys, fish, tapirs, and porcupines. Their hunting activities regulate prey populations and maintain the balance of the forest ecosystem. However, their population is threatened by habitat loss and poaching, highlighting the importance of conservation efforts to protect their habitat and prey species.

Conserving the few remaining landscapes where Sumatran tigers thrive is essential to the survival of the subspecies. This involves more than just protecting the land itself. it also requires the establishment of conservation zones in areas with the highest density of tigers and viable prey. Additionally, legislation is needed to address the rampant issues of illegal poaching, logging, and encroachment in tiger habitats. By implementing these measures, we can ensure that the remaining Sumatran tigers have a fighting chance at survival.
