So do your classmates. It doesn’t matter if you think you are a “good” or a “bad” writer or if you like writing or prefer to pretend like you don’t write very often. You are welcome here if English is not your first language or if you use one of the many dialects of English that exist. You are welcome here just as you are. Be respectful of each other. Always.

WRDS 2101 provides strategies for writing in academic majors, across majors, and beyond graduation into professions and / or graduate school. The focus is on how to transfer academic writing to students' chosen profession or field. Students build on their current knowledge, acquiring advanced research practices; engaging in critical analysis of professional materials in their field; learning to use grammar, mechanics, and textual conventions for appropriate media; and understanding and supporting arguments and claims with credible evidence. This is a 3 credit class.

All assignments --EXCEPT peer response drafts-- have a 24 hour extension, but use this sparingly as we are often using assignments to do work during class time. Failure to submit a draft for peer response = 0 for that portion of the assignment sequence.

If you want to take the 24 hour extension, make a note in the Canvas comment section for that assignment to let me know. Failure to do so will get you a zero for that assignment since I'll assume you just didn't do it.

All assignments in Canvas will “close” 24 hours after the due date.

Important: Because our work builds on itself, missed assignments cannot be made-up after the 24 hour late-work window.

Academic Integrity

Academic integrity is a shared responsibility. I’m responsible for teaching the rules and conventions of acknowledging sources in writing. You are responsible for learning to use sources ethically and appropriately.

Plagiarism: Writing teachers and programs across the country have adopted the definition of plagiarism from the Council of Writing Program Administrators (WPA): “In an instructional setting, plagiarism occurs when a writer deliberately uses someone else’s language, ideas, or other original (not common-knowledge) material without acknowledging its source. This definition applies to texts published in print or online, to manuscripts, and to the work of other student writers.”

Misuse of sources: The WPA distinguishes plagiarism from misuse of sources: “A student who attempts (even if clumsily) to identify and credit his or her source, but who misuses a specific citation format or incorrectly uses quotation marks or other forms of identifying material taken from other sources, has not plagiarized. Instead, such a student should be considered to have failed to cite and document sources appropriately.”

Undocumented / unauthorized use of ChatGPT or other AI large language model (LLM) algorithms will be considered a breach of academic integrity. This means that if you use an AI LLM to generate a piece of writing and turn it in as your own work, without acknowledging its source, this will be considered plagiarism.

Consequences of academic dishonesty: The WRDS department takes plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty seriously and responds in accordance with UNCC Code of Student Academic Integrity. Plagiarism or cheating—or assisting another student who plagiarizes or cheats—may result in a failing grade on an assignment or for the entire course, and a report of Academic Misconduct. Another consequence may be a grade of FX (Academic Dishonesty Violation).

If you consult a source and are unsure whether you have plagiarized or misused it, discuss your concerns with me before submitting the assignment. If you submit an assignment for one UNC Charlotte course and would like to submit it (or a similar version) for another course, you must first receive written permission from both instructors and then appropriately cite your earlier work.

Consult the Office of Student Conduct & Academic Integrity to learn more about your rights and responsibilities.
